In one of Wayne Goddard's books he says to braze a piece of all thread to the end o the tang and then a nut to the inside of the pomel. Why not just leave the whole tang steel and thread it? Is there a reason for this that I'm not seeing? Thanks

You can do it either way.. I guess that he is saving a little tool steel with his method..

I have a bunch of all thread in many different sizes. I also thread my pommels sometimes, instead of brazing a nut on them.

In many cases, the tang is hardened right along with the blade. All-thread would be a sloution to this.
Personally, I do a full blade quench. When it comes to ricassos, guard shoulders, tangs, etc., tempered martensite is tougher than unhardened austenite. But, it requires that the tang be drawn way back with an acetylene torch three or four times to remove nearly all temper so as to be able to thread the end.
I prefer that method.

Thanks for all the thoughts on the question. I've got a bowie I'm working on that I'm going to have to use the all thread because I didn't make my tang long enough and the other one I'll thread the steel. Thanks.
