Hidden Tang. WTH

have tried to drill my handle for a hidden tang and I suck. I have 3/16 thick steel and I can't understand what drill bit to use and how to bore the hole out deep enough to fit the full tang inside. My bits slide into the hole next to it every time even if I punch first. Tell the the exact size and type of drill of whatever I need to use. Please

you need to drill your holes a little farther apart. They will most likely still break through just where they are touching. You will then need to use a broaching cutter, or files to connect the holes (remove the remaining material) and to square up the ends. use a drill at least one size smaller than your steel thickness and file to dimension.
