Hi Guys, I tried searching for a how to Hide The Thong Hole in a fixed blade knife...Can Someone show me a pic of a good example & explain how it is done ?..TIA , mikeinct

There are different ways to do it. I have done it by cutting a notch in the butt of the tang, fit up the scales as usual, and place a hidden pin in the notch that is secured by the scales. You feed the lanyard around the hidden pin.

I think the terminology you're looking for is a hidden lanyard hole. You can also do it like Shane but without the pin. Notch the scales evenly and drill a hole in the edge of the tang that sits in the notches.

What is in the thread and what I imagined were quite different! Lol!

Here are couple of mine.

There are various ways to do it. Here's the way I do it:

I drill a series of holes by the butt end of the tang then connect them into a kidney bean shape.

Then, using the hole in the tang as a template I mark the hole on the insides of the handle scales and rout the chamber to the lines. Then, I connect the inner chamber with the butt end of the scales.

After I connect the inner chamber to the outside on both scales, I mate up the left and right panels with temporary alignment pins and fine tune the opening so it is symmetrical and pleasing to the eye. Lastly, I round and polish the inside surface of the lanyard hole in the tang at the butt end. This is so no sharp edges rasp away at the lanyard and cause a failure. The rest is normal glue up and shaping. Keep in mind that your hidden lanyard cavity will fill up with glue squeeze out when assembling the handle. So you will have to keep cleaning it out until the glue stops squeezing out.

I4Marc that is some really clean work. How are you removing material from your scales for the hidden lanyard hole?

On a side note, I like that you work in millimeters!

Hey Clint,

I use a Dremel for hogging out the material. Haha, I don't always work in metric but when I'm using hidden pins I have to be very careful how long to make them or I risk grinding through to them when shaping the handle.

This thread has been VERY educational for me. First time I'd heard of a hidden lanyard hole setup. Both methods are VERY slick and look good. I4marc; you sure did a nice "WIP" - with that handle shape, a regular lanyand hole just wouldn't look right. Both of ya'll have nice looking knives.

iMarc, that tapered tang, handle, hidden lanyard hole combo is SWEEEEET!  Whole knife is great of course but that handle is just perfect for me.
Straight in the inspirational folder for sure. Thanks for sharing and the lanyard hole construction.

Thank You All So Much...I only knew about the hidden pin...I4Marcs System Rocks on the Aldrich knives...That Is Perfection MIKEINCT !!!!

Thanks folks. I think Shane has a wonderful knife there and his system is a bit simpler to do than mine and looks great. Either way, it's a slick look. For the minimal amount of work involved it gives the finished piece a very clean and refined appearance.
