Hiding

I haven't heard this, but it sounds like the "quickly walk through water" myth.

The dog's nose is good enough to simply pick up your scent from further away. I would venture a dog can smell your scent *on* the peppers just as easily.

I think we've got a few dog trackers here who can really tell us.
I think you misunderstood. The peppers dont cover your scent, they ruin the dog's sense of smell for a bit. Have you ever sniffed pepper? It makes your nose burn and you sneeze a lot. I think that's what it should do to a dog as well. I'm not sure if the dog would sniff close enough to the ground to get any of it in his nose though.

I'm no expert, and I may not be getting the point of this thread, but I did read a couple of interesting comments: Why do you think you're so important to become the target of a search, and how did you get that way? If you are going to do things that other people don't like, then maybe you should do things in smaller parcels and stay under the system's radar. Hiding among other people might be the best idea, not going solo through the woods. Will leaving a trail of peppers defeat a dog's senses, or will it just give him a new scent to follow...you are going to have a smell of peppers on you now.

I've heard that if you leave a bunch of ground hot peppers(or other similar powder) in your trail, the dog will sniff it and be unable to smell anything for a while. It sounds like it may work, do any of you guys know for sure?
cool hand luke is prob. responsible for this myth.:)

There are ways to stop a dog from smelling you . As they are permanent and detrimental to the dog I don,t think this is the place to get into them .

Anyone may have reason to want to get lost .

As I told my Ex . I have had a lot more fun getting lost than I ever had being found . L:O:L

I personally was stepped on during a paintball game and the only camo I was wearing was the canadian issue cad pat and some well placed grasses and weeds.
Really all you need to do is think about your surroundings and be aware of them. If you know about your surroundings you can blend in quite easily.

What is with the attitude about being important enough to have to hide? Didn't you play hide and seek or cowboys and indians as a kid. As was said earlier, hiding can be fun. Anyhow, the question is legitimate and worthwhile. The better you know how to go undetected, the better you understand how to search. You don't have to be "important" to be looked for.

As to the question, good sense is your best bet. Pay attention to your surroundings and blend in. The previous suggestions are all great, try some, like playing grown-up hide and seek.
As far as books, you can check out "The Complete Tracker" by McDougall, "Tracking & The Art of Seeing" by Rezendes and some of the best literature on hiding can be found in the U.S. Army manual listed earlier and most of the Sniper Training Manuals put out by U.S. Army and Marines. But, nothing beats good ol' woodscraft and smarts.

mymindisamob - my question is about putting yourself into a life-and-death situation. Why do it? I can see a soldier on the run - my father was one of those in WWII, POW escapee. In modern life, think about what you are doing. I agree with other people who have said this, your mind is your best tool and weapon.
