High dollar customs...to use or not to use.

I don't own any true customs. But I feel like I would use them, most custom makers seem to intend for their knives to actually be used. And used harder than most people will use a cheap knife

Sorry to Hijack the thread but what about those fish. Man those fish.
Dont get me wrong I got several high end customs and mid techs that get carried and used regularly. Not abused though save that for the low end productions. Beautiful folder BTW, love that orange peel.
So back to the fish. Little info about the when where how if you don't mind. No worries if not.
Cheers

I don't currently own any custom knives made for me, just one that was made to order by a store owner to his specs with the intention of selling. I can see there being just as much demand for custom knives bought for artistic value as for actual use, but probably with more interest in aesthetics or perhaps replicating an existing design ala "Just like my grandfather brought back from the war" or "Like the one I lost in the fire" or something along those lines. I don't think we see a lot of posts from many folks who order custom knives for such purposes, but I can easily see where that would be a valid reason. That said, I personally wouldn't order a custom unless it was with the intention of using it regularly, probably more often than my production knives. To me, the whole point of a custom is to combine all the features and design elements in a single knife that I've liked in production knives. It should look and feel just the way I like, made from the materials I feel are best for my uses.

Haha, there's no such thing as hijacking one of my threads with talk of fishing. Hell, most of my posts are fishing threads thinly disguised with a little knife talk. The trout I got this morning fly fishing a stream in eastern Utah where I'm visiting some friends. Got em all on a dark pheasant tail fly. :)

I haven't used any knives that cost more than $2200... because that's the most I've paid for a knife.

I knew those fish looked surprisingly normal

Haha, I think that would qualify you to comment on using high dollar folders. :D

Yeah, its been fun up here but I'm ready to get back to hauling in big snapper on my kayak.
Use your nice knives and enjoy them and be grateful.
That sounds like a pretty solid recipe...especially the part at the end.

Sure you should use it. If I bought a $100 million house, I would sure as heck use it.

I have actually given this some thought (I have a video on it). I have owned some knives I thought were too nice to use CKF Garza amazing knife but I was constantly worried I'd mark it up so rarely carried it. The other was a 0392 same issue. I sold them. Now I think carefully before I buy there are some knives I love but will probably never own because of this. What I do know if I'm looking at a higher dollar blade I choose finishes and materials that will stand up to abuse an not really show wear.

I always say, when people ask why I drive what I do to Costco - "not driving your "supercar" is like having a super model GF and not having sex with her, so the next guy gets her like new."

Use your knives for their intended purpose or what you want to make their purpose; but I see no benefit of safe queen knives...besides capitalism.

Its an easy question for me. If I can't justify using it then I can't justify buying it.
It's an easy question for me, too. If I can't afford it, then I can't justify buying it. Whether I choose to use it really isn't a concern for me at all . . . except when I'm responding to threads like this one. And then I'm guided by a simple philosophy . . . there is no wrong reason for owning knives. Those who choose to use them are no "better" than those who don't. If anything, users of high-dollar customs should be grateful for the collectors and investors among us. If it weren't for them, there would be far fewer high-dollar customs for users to choose from and far fewer knifemakers around to make them.

Would you not wear this if you owned it?

Same difference.

Not even . . . unless you could only be considered a user if you had taken your Rolex down to 12,800 feet.

In the final analysis, what difference does it make what people do with their knives if it helps support the hobby? More power to ALL of them, I say!

Once I really got into knives, I have only been interested in custom/handmade knives - and I don't buy knives I don't use.

(My girlfriend doesn't either)

Honestly I have more trouble using limited edition knives than I would a custom.

That makes sense to me. A custom maker can always make another custom. But once a limited edition production knife sells out, it's (presumably) gone for good.

Does this question offend you in some way? I was careful in my op to make it clear that I was not telling people how they should view their knives, but simply giving my own thoughts. I was also asking others to share how they viewed the subject. Are you saying it is somehow wrong to ask?

No. But to assume that your question doesn't have a ton of baggage associated with it is naïve. There is a prevailing view here that those who don't use their knives have no reason to live. A cursory review of threads like yours will lead to that inevitable but shortsighted conclusion. And unless you simply can't see it, your thread is already bending in that direction. I mean, how may people have posted that they only collect high-dollar customs? I know they're out there and so do you. But they don't want to absorb the stigma attached with being a "collector" or worse yet, an "investor/flipper" . . . God forbid.
