Have a para 2 s30v. Like it, but i sure would like a thinner slicer in a high edge retention steel. Roughest use would be cardboard/blister packaging.

I'd love an m390 / s90v para 2 but as such they're a bit priced out on the secondary market and in collector territory.

Two im considering are benchmade barrage 581, thinner than the para, or the benchmade shoki 480, thinner yet still and sometimes found for cheaper, have heard good and bad about the nak-lok, but as long as its not jiggly, hell it could be a friction pivot.

I just want a nice thin slice of high edge retention user steel for user prices, not collector.

Any recommends on models/steels?

IF you can find one go get a Benchmade 710 in m390, its an incredible EDC blade and can also slice well.

Para2 isn't a thin folder at all really, so there are a bunch of choices if that's your definition of thin :p, but that's a good thing (except towards your wallet :D)

Benchmade 710 in M390
Benchmade Mini/Presidio in CPM M4
Benchmade Lum Ti Monolock
Spyderco Gayle Bradley
Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air
Spyderco Delica/Ladybug/Dragonfly/Stretch/Manbug/Caly 3/Caly 3.5 in ZDP189

Ha! A 710 just closed on fleabay that i was watching for $159.50 but i shied away as my sharpening skill and equipment are not condusive to owning a recurve, but now i may be kicking myself.

Right my para2 when plunged deep into double thick cardboard ellicits all manner of grunting and panting in short order.

Yes i have a box cutter but whats the fun in that? :)

I believe when the next run of Para 2 M390's are delivered, (Dec 2012 I think) the secondary market prices will be more reasonable.

Thanks for that info! Wasn't aware. How much and how fast is a sprint run bought out?

You might also wait for the Manix 2 XL sprint in S90V. It's not any thinner, but has a much broader blade which will make it a better slicer.

Spyderco Military in M390 and peel ply carbon fiber...to date the best $240 Ive spent.
CTS XHP Manix 2 or PM2 is also a viable choice.

Correction to my previous thought, Manix 2 XL has both a thinner AND broader blade, so the S90V version should be a rremendous slicer.

I'd stay away from hollow grinds for slicing, the transition from the grind to the flat is too steep for it to be of any use when plunged into a material. My 710 slices far better than my GB for that reason despite the edge being much thinner on the GB.

Btw the m390 710 isn't a limited edition now it's a dealer exclusive. Though the recurve is troublesome and apparently the para 2 slices better due to to the taller blade.

The shoki seems like a good bet but the lock is apparently terrible. As long as you don't use it too hard it should be fine though, and I'm sure benchmade would replace it if it juggles.

I thought my para was a flat grind. Lots of good advice everybody thanks! For a spyderco sprint do i check their website daily or a reseller?

It is flat ground, I was just suggesting you eliminate the GB from your options. Sprint runs are usually dealer exclusive, and a Google search will take you to their page quite quickly. The M390 para 2 is available for pre orders for international customers now I wouldn't expect delivery till the middle of next year or so.

I usually cringe when I see someone post what great slicers their hollow grind knife is because it gives those that don't know the wrong impression. It is if you are only slicing something that isn't deeper than the hollow grind. For general use the FFG is a better slicer imho.

My gayle Bradley is a way better slicer than my para 2 sprint. It is a thin high hollow grind with slightly thinner blade stock than the para 2. It slices great and holds an edge a long time.

Agreed, the Gayle Bradley slices better than a Para 2.

Why not go with a custom from one of the great makers here?

That way you can pick the steel and other options you want.

Just a thought.
