high layer damascus cracking during forge?

well.. i am already at it again... forged up more cable from darren ellis. nothing fancy this time, just som cable damascus fior a stock removal knife. btw... all my flaws have always been in the very middle of the cable.. has anyone replaced that middle strand with sold steel? i thought about doing that but wanted to ask first.
You will know when its fully welded just by the way it feels under the hammer, for the first few heats there is no noise. Then after some hammer work...sound appears in the mix.
my damascus experience(not much) is mostly with cable.I have had sucess removing the core and replacing with solid steel(w-2) on this bowie

Not quite what I thought it would look like but it still looked good IMO.
By all means play around with it that's where new ideas come from,I just twisted up a billet of 2 different types of cable with a post tensioning cable core, that should look pretty neat.

thanks for the help guys!
i am going to try a stacked billet next.. well.. i have some cable i am working on right now.. but other than that.. i am going to try some 1095 and 1075 for a real low contrast layered look. the steel will be the same color but the "weld lines" will show up, right?
thanks!

The 1095 will etch somewhat lighter than the 1075, which has more manganese. If I remember correctly. 1095 and 1084 will definitely have some contrast, not sure about 1075.

well i got the steel rom Admiral, and it is designated as 1080/1075 soo... i dunno
thanks though!

1075 has manganese, .70% 1095 has manganese, .30-.50%. So yes, you would get contrast.

Knifemaker87, good idea about using bar stock instead of cable. Cable can be a pain and I've never seen a piece yet that didn't have small inclusions.
Get some 15n20 and 1080, makes good contrast and heat treats beautifully.

Have fun,

Bill
