High output mini-lights

I have just purchased my first "modern" flashlight ever and am feeling like a kid waiting for it. It's a ITP A1-EOS 190 Lumen Pocket Keychain LED Flashlight and runs on a single CR123 battery. It was probably one of the few pieces of gear that I put off getting because the small lights put out so little light I saw them as nearly pointless, but ITP seems to give quite the performance in a small enough package to be quite viable.

What other ones should I start considering? I thought about a single "AA" light due to the readily available batteries, and it's size. For the performance though there are some incredible "Kit size" lights now that we'd have never dreamed of a little while ago.

What do you guys pack on your person?

Here is a 1400 lumen Moddoo. I really like his work.

I was amazed at the output and trying to start a fire on a moonless night got my attention. I never kept a light in my pocket PSK.

I would like to see the clips turned around so it could be attached to a hat or shirt collar and leave both hands free while still following work like feeding twigs into a baby fire.

What or Who is Moddoo?

Moddoo is a flashlight maker/modder. I have one of his 1100, 1400, and 2600 lumen lights. He makes custom heads/drop-ins for Surefires that are crazy (they go fast). Here is his website.

Fenix 1XAA, 2XAA and 1XAAA I have a ton of experience with and they are excellent lights if you work mids and would be valuable beyond description if you hurt yourself in the woods at night, etc.

I carry a fenix pd-20 every single day and sometimes a surefire 6p with a 320 lumen bulb for night walks.

Jeans pocket: Nitecore D10 R2 (fantastic light, variable output 2 - 145 Lumen)
Jacket Pocket: Olight Ti Infinitum (Also R2 emitter)
Key ring: Liteflux LF2XT R2

IMO
Everyone should own a Nitecore D10 - fantastic light!

Nice!
What's the run time on that?

I have a 7000 Lumen light, but the run time would only be around 10 minutes. Handy for starting a fire though - flame from newspaper in a second or two. Runs from 8 x 18650 cells and runs a 90W bulb at 212W - a little overdriven!

I have the 1400 lumen light in a Surefire C2 bored body and using a 18650 it runs for a 30 minutes. The 1100 lumen Moddoo light I have is in a 9P +extension runs for 2 hours.

That's crazy! :eek::eek::eek: I guess you are a gadgetaholic!
A good light is one of the most valuable tools to have in many emergency or survival situations, IMO. I EDC a Fenix LD10 that I really like. It's a single AA, multiple levels, strobe and SOS, and very bright for a AA. I also have an ARC AAA on my keychain, not the fanciest or brightest available, but hammer tough and reliable. I try not to visit the flashlight forums too much. Seems like something new and improved comes out every week, although I do drop by time to time to see if anything substantially advanced is out.

:eek:

What do you use that beast for ?

That's crazy! :eek::eek::eek: I guess you are a gadgetaholic!

He stands out in the backyard,
in the suburbs of Chicago,
wearing his Gold Sparkle Speedos
and neon green Croc's
trying to signal the mothership.

while i have a bunch of Surefires and some 2xAA Ray-O-Vac lights i recently got a pair of 1xAA cheapies by Roomsen for $12 ea. ok. i's not a Quark, Fenix or Surefire... but it's not bad for EDC abuse considering the price.

only problem is that i was expecting it to have a pocket clip and it doesen't.

Fenix is next.... just couldn't swing that at the moment.

For a wilderness/bushcraft light I would highly recommend the Surefire A2 Aviator - the incandescent model not one of the new LED ones. The incandescent light is really good for seeing the greens & browns in the bush and for its size the A2 can throw the beam of light a long way. The A2 also has 3 low powered LEDs that are good for low light and long battery run time.

For a bigger brighter light in the bush I really like my modified Maglite 2D flashlights. I can also carry my A2 in my pocket as a backup.

Another good light to have when camping is the Zebralight H501w - seriously you guys should all get one of these! http://goinggear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_20&products_id=140
The H501w is small & light and runs on 1 x AA, it comes with a headband for wearing as a headlamp and with a clip so you can clip it to a shirt pocket or whatever, they also can be set down on a flat surface. With a wide flood beam this thing is great for seeing what you are doing while keeping your hands free to do it. 2.3 hours on high, 19 hours on medium and 3.5 days continuously on low - that's good for weeks in the bush, a four pack of AA batteries is 4 more sets!
