I agree that knives are a nice idea when it comes to self-defense, but in reality they're probably not "the best" option when one truly considers the mechanics and potential consequences of defending oneself with a blade. Pepper spray/mace is a nice alternative and suited to most of the same circumstances in which one might consider using a knife for self-defense. It can be used from a distance and is non-lethal. (Served me very well on one occasion.) Of course it depends on the situation.However, I don't suggest using a knife for self defense. There is a good chance you will end up cutting yourself in the struggle or having it taken away and used on you. Best idea is not to put yourself in a position where you need to defend yourself or to run.
If neither one of those is an option than a concealed carry permit and a hand gun is a much better option. You don't have to be within arms reach to use it and it is much more effective.
Nice knife, but not legal where there are 3inch blade limits.
How do you figure that? My measurements put the cutting edge at just under three inches.

It's not the length of the edge that generally gets measured, it's the tip to handle, and probably at the longest possible point.
