Here's the official answer from Exped customer service. They have great CS, very quick and responsive, I have shot them a number of questions and been very happy with the info I have received.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for the follow-up. *This is an issue I've spoken with a few people about; *Andy speaks fluent English, but with a Swiss German influence, and I think there is a little bit lost in translation in his description in this video. *The foam in the pump does need a bit of time to self inflate in order to attain its full volume for pumping. *Also, with both valves open, the insulation and mat material will gain a small amount of volume over an extended period. *That said, 'self inflating' has a very different connotation attached to it due to other styles/brands of 'self inflating' mats, and has lead to a little bit of confusion for a few of our customers. *While I certainly wouldn't call the SynMat or DownMat self-inflating, they will gain a small percentage of the overall volume if left sitting with both valves open for a bit of time. *I hope this clears things up, but please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you!
