For you guys from CA does anyone has any idea how is the weather up there at the hight sierra???? Im looking more the Lone Pine area. Reason i ask is that i get diffrent temp and snow condition at the high elevation. Im planing on going up there next month for a week or so.

Great link. I used to use 395.com too, but it doesn't seem to be working right now. Usually the trails are clear, even in the high elevations by mid June.

When it gets really hot in the summer you will have heavy rain storms in the high sierras, with lots of thunder and lightening. Dont forget your rain gear!

Thanks Lambertiana thats an awsome link...
Hwtsauer on my very first backpacking trip... Thats exactly what happend i went there in late july with no rain gear. I had no idea how to backpack i just got a very old back and filled it with 85lb of things i thought i might need took the dog and left... I got rained at hail the size of large marbels... It still was one of the best trips i ever took...
I want to go to the rocky lakes and from there where ever i feel like at the time.

Just returned from Bridgeport and the Owens Valley was in the mid-80s. If you're hiking in be prepared for either snow, rain or sun. It's the Sierras, if you don't like the weather, wait fifteen minutes.

It's apparently been a weird spring. Lots of stuff is in bloom but the melt hasn't begun yet.

Tknife i shall make sure to post pics on here..
those are some of the older ones.
hope you like them

Is that Horseshoe Meadow in the second pic? Last year it was completley brown down there, I never saw it so dry before.

I cant think of the name of the meadow but its the one on the other side of cottomwood pass. Thats the horseshoe meadow

Im heading to June lake on June 1st for some relaxing and fishing, like everyone has said, prepare for weather change.

rain gear, and stay hydrated. You notice it more on the East, but I worry about it more on the West slopes where it sneaks up on you. I just got back from hiking north of truckee and "down" there it was mid 80s daytime and low 40s night. Bone dry, but rain storms can come up fast and unpredicted.

I went backpacking up to Cottonwood Lakes in July, 2006. The temp in Lone Pine was like 105 or more. One night there was rain and thunder and by the morning, everything was dry. There was no sign of the rain from the night before. It was so strange!

Yeah last June it got up to 102, then down below 40 at night! I was also up there in the summer of '06 and witnessed the same type of weather. Pouring rain one night with lots of lightning, but completely dry and blue the next day. WIld stuff up there.

well guys if you want to join the walk.. you are more then welcom to come.. I dont have any particular area i have to be at except i want to get to the rocky lakes and take lots of pics out there.. maybe see what other lakes and rivers i can make in one week time... Oh talk about rain.... It just started to rain here in LA that is weird, some people say its earthquake weather lol...

Well if any of you California guys want to go up from the west side, I'd sure like to go if I'm able. I live in Visalia which is on the way to Sequoia. I think it would be fun to get a few guys together for a short trip. I can't really leave the house for more than a weekend or so but short trips are fun too.

A morning view on the Tahoe Rim Trail...

Sasha,

I was out hiking a ridge in the Santa Monica mountains this afternoon and we experienced a thunderstorm. I agree that's very unusual for LA in late May.

If you have a few bucks to spare, check out some of the ultralight backpacking websites and see if you can decrease your load. Makes backpacking a lot more pleasant. When you are older (and if you get heavier like me), it will really pay off.

They just had a free ultralight backpacking seminar at A16 near Pico & Sepulveda on 5/19. Some of the other stores may have one scheduled over the next couple weeks. It is put on by a respected manufacturer of UL gear and might be pretty useful.

Have fun!

To make explicit what is implicit in several of the great posts above, be ready for wind. Tarps pitched in exposed locations have been known to leave downwind in more than one piece.

Coldest night I ever spent was July 4th between remnants of snow at 10,000+ in a stupidly inadequate sleeping bag. (Me stupid. Not bag.)

Thats one thing im going to have to buy before i go... Something warm for long johns.. Am going to check out REI. My sleeping bag is not that great i would compansate for it with warm underware. As for the wind im not sure if i want to take my tarp or a tent..
