Hey guys, I have always bought my high temp (2100f) foil from enco, it's normally on sale $114 for a 20" x 50' roll. And an even better deal with a 20% off coupon and free shipping.
Now that enco is going away and merging with MSC, I am curious where you guys have found the best prices on foil?

Ben, are they eliminating that product line or are you concerned that MSC will jack the price?

Yeah, this Enco MSC bs has got me pretty fired up, and all the deceptive emails I'm getting from MSC assuring me about how great it's gonna be only exacerbates the issue. Supposedly if you register with MSC they'll match the prices for a year or something that you've gotten from Enco. Not sure you'll ever get it as cheap as it was with the 20% off and free shipping though, but it may be time to stock up.

Occasionally I can find it on ebay in rolls cheaper, but I haven't stumbled across a cheaper supplier. I'm sure there's a wholesale option however.

jdm, I think he's concerned about MSC prices, which will assuredly be massively more expensive outside of whatever meager efforts they're making to assuage concerns of such. Enco was pretty much the only place I'd shop outside of ebay, because they could be semi-reasonable, especially at the magical intersection of old-school sales/specials coupled with competitive internet era pricing. MSC, Grainger, etc, aren't remotely, unless you've got a big account with them, they're old-school "screw the little guy, we're the only game in town" style businesses, that only continue to exist due to the relative slow pace the industrial supply industry seems to be moving at compared to the rest of the market.

Funny thing is, I always though Enco was owned by MSC in the first place, which always confused me as to the price variation on the same things.

I'll miss Enco too.

Being in Canada, I was never eligible for the free shipping, but at least they did sell to Canada

Their prices and their sale prices were good
They had a large product line and the website was easy to search.

(RE the website rant - have you ever searched for plywood in Home Depot website ?
It's impossible to find a certain thickness like 1/2" plywood, instead you get to sort by brand name and "pulpluarity"
I don't give a fig about plywood brand name. I want a certain size.

Try to find a local source, if you pay shipping, it's enough to kill a normal "good deal"

Sowa Tools, KBC and Travers are for me in Canada

Maybe Amazon if you get free shipping
Try calling pop's ?

Travers generally puts it on sale once per year. The last time I purchased a roll for work it was $119.99 plus shipping.

i have never bought the high temp foil and the foil that I have bought came from Jantz or someone similar.

what are you running that you need a full roll of high temp i run as much as 2050f on the low temp stuff and have done 2100 once (a mess but the blade was OK )
i run 2000f all the time and have no issues i guess if your running M4 or other ultra alloys often a roll woudl dbe needed

CPM3V Butch. Pretty much all of the stainless I use would need the high temp also. The 1800 wouldn't cut it I don't think.
I don't really go any higher than 2100 ever, usually 2000 - 2050.

ok i have never used the high temp stuff and as i said runn 2000f all the time save your self somem $ and try out a small amount of the low temp stuff as a test

i will relook at my roll to double check al numbers but i dont thingm you need the high temp stuff

McMaster Carr carries some stainless foil rolls if you search over there. Can't say the price seems super attractive though. Probably not as bad as Grainger!

Enco was purchased by MSC in 1997. MSC l suspect has decided to pull in the reins since ENCO was always a few pennies cheaper for the identical product lines.

The best price on High Temp Foil was always ENCO....Soon to be MSC higher price unfortunately.

Mike

Enco's $119.00 web price..........MSC $185.00

yea its more then just a few pennys but liek you guys i buy a big roll for the best cost perr lb.
jsut picked up 260lb of XHP kitchen stock and that order was costly

Hey Butcher_block,

I'm new to knife making: a newbie noob.

When you say, "low temp stuff", specifically what are you referring to? Off-the-retail store Reynolds " heavy gauge" wrap? If yes, I'd assume you'd double or even triple wrap the blade?

Thanks in advance.

No sir. That would be a huge melted mess.

"Low temp" varies by manufacturer. Some is rated up to 1800 degrees F, and some is rated to 2000f.

One of the reasons I always get the high temp stuff, is that Enco had it on permanent sale. So it was cheaper than even the low temp stuff from anyone.
I just ordered a couple more 50' rolls from Enco while I can. Might be the end of cheap foil.

Didn't think so. Thanks for feedback.

PS: you make some really awesome knives.

I don't use a whole lot of it, but I think I"ll do the same. I kept hoping we'd get one more coupon from Enco before the transition, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
