higher end production, mid tech, even customs

20-ish years ago I wondered how long Chris Reeve would be able to keep shoving $300 folders out the door before the bubble burst.

Apparently, there are enough of us out here with more dollars than sense. So who am I to wonder any more?

Not much is going to surprise me anymore, I suspect.

At least for me and apparently many more out there is that we like companies like Chris Reeves and Hinderer and others that impress me lately like Olamic because they have a quality folder we know will be there several years down the road for parts and supplies on particular knife and style we like and don't want to disappear until the next fad comes along. I love the look, quality and what you get from the Chinese knives today but I take no comfort in knowing after I spend 400 plus dollars and in a year or so that knife is no longer being produced. And if I break a blade which I have before than in the trash it goes. I had recently sent REATE a email asking about years down the road about this. Here was the reply..........

About the warranty service, if the knife is damaged by misuse and become worn as time goes on, we could repair the knife free of charge, but the shipping would be born by customer,
and please kindly noted that we usually don't offer to replace the blade because the blade and the handle are matching, the quantity is limited.
Hope this could answer your question.
Any question please feel free to contact me.
Kind regards,
Joan Lu

I like the fact they will fix it if they can even if it is my fault but if I need a new blade I am out of luck. Thats fine for there are target customers who do not mind that but I am sticking with American companies where they have a certain line of knives that have been a stable base for many years. I do not ever sell the things I buy for my hobbies but I use them and I want to know that they will be backed in the future for repairs or maybe a replacement if I really liked it over the years. Minus electronics of course where tech is always changing. Maybe as Chinese knives grow in popularity certain knives will become popular and become a stable in there line up that people keep coming back to? Anyways that is my take on it why those knife makers have lasted and will continue to last as long as the quality continues.

I'm more of a collector than a user of higher end knives and $200.00 is a high price for me to spend even for a Buck going straight into my collection. I too wondered how so many people could support the huge increase in the number of models, company's and maker's who are putting out high end knives. I personally know only a handful of folks who might spend over $500.00 a year on knives and most of them are in the BCCI and lifetime collectors. I'm sure more than a few of them consider the knives they buy as a 401K or a retirement investment or part of there estate. I remember being at the Gator show here in Florida in 2014 and the talk in the smoking lounge was how bad sales were. Every adult in America owns knives of one kind or another but very, very few will spend big bucks for a using knife. If you choose wisely a dozen or so will handle 99.9% of your cutting chores ..well maybe 2 dozen.
