Yes, the styles break down by geographic region -- Highland, Lowland, Islay, etc. Some are peatier than others, some more heathery, etc.

I have a bottle of dalwhinnie 15 that i'm very fond of, very smooth. Lagavulin reminds me of an uncle who past, he and my dad got me onto the scotch. funny the things a glass of good scotch can make you think of.

Dalwhinnie is a very nice, very sip-able, light scots whisky...always have a bottle in my cabinet.

Highland Park 12 yo is great stuff and my best recommendation for an allround scotch.
I love Laphroaig too, but mainly in fall or winter. There is nothing like a dram of Laphroaig when you come home after a trip in the cold.

So how do you describe "heathery?" Or rather, what brand of scotch has it predominant.

Hi Gollnick, don't know if you're still around on this thread, but don't these styles break down according to altitude also. Highland Park being a Highland style Scotch, while the Peaty Islays are more from the lowlands?

As AJ said the styles break down by region, not altitude. Highland Park is actually a "Island" style and distilled on the island of Orkney. Islay, while also an island, is different enough from the other "Island" styles that it's considered it's own region.

HP has heathery notes but if you try a bottle of Scapa, you will instantly realize what is meant by "heathery"
They used to have a nice 14 yo. http://www.scapamalt.com/

Scapa is a very small distillery (only 3 people working there and not all of the time!) on the island of Orkney like Highland Park, but their Whisky does not have any peat and not a lot of smoke. But heather and honey
