Highland special or Fox River?

Hi guys

What bark river do you recommend as all rounder woods knife?
Highland special or Fox River?

They are both of the same basic design, the main difference is size...as always, it really depends on your intended usage. But either one will cover most woods and hunting tasks very well, the exception being chopping. The A2 tool steel is excellent.
 
I couldn't decide either so I got both. I got the Highland first but always wanted the Fox River, one day one came up on the exchange and i grabbed it.
 
I have both. I loveeeeeeee the Highland Special, But the foxriver is bigger. Won't trade my Highland's for nothing.
 
balio, yes I've batoned with the Highland, no worries with that steel. It's best suited for kindling sized wood, the blade is about 3-3/4 long I believe. It's a handy sized knife for many tasks and so is the Fox River. I was torn between the same two models and went with the Highland because I already had a couple of 4 inch blades. You can't really go wrong either way...now there's a helpful comment, eh?
 
As much as I like both of those knives (my favorite is the Fox River Recurve),

…as an “all around woods knife” I like the Montana Guides Knife better.

It features a bigger handle (which really works for me) and a slightly thicker A2 blade.


The Montana Guide is the guardless version of the Gameskeeper (the knife the Bravo-1 is based on).

I am mostly a hunter as opposed to bush crafter, The Highland is about as close to a perfect hunting knife as I have ever used. This year I have a Boker to try out, that might change my mind, D2 compared to A2. Time will tell. The Boker is nearly the same size as the Highland. I suppose the Fox River would be a bit more useful as a all around knife.

Mike. How does the MG compare to the Bravo One for thickness.
 
It is strange, I have huge hands like 2X gloves are tight, however the Highland seems to fit my hand very well for hunting chores.
 
The fox river handle is more greared towards a precision grip you'd use for skinning, cleaning, caping vs. a strong palm grip that you'd use for more bushcrafting type tasks, imo of course.

I baton mine, no sweat. The highland holds a great edge!

As said, the two are basically the same.
I prefer the highland due to the lack of external lanyard loop....

Thanks for the comparison pictures.

As I have a gunny, it has enabled me to get a much better perspective on the Fox river handle :thumbup:
