Highly Durable Knife for $125?

SR Camp Tramps cost $153.90 USD.
SOG SEAL 2000s cost $135 USD.

SOG Tigersharks cost $150 USD.

*starts thinking*

"BTW, the chosen knife will be given and used by over 12 people in very demanding conditions; 3 days between resupplies and no place to replace broken knives."

Maybe you ought to look a little harder at the BK-9. It surely isn't a kitchen knife. Hop over to the Camillus forum and take a peek at the mini review I did on mine.

If you are really hurting for money, some one here should have a Cold Steel catalog lying around. They offer Carbon V seconds, they come with decent blade coatings. The problem with seconds is that they can not be returned. Also, they have surface imperfections, but they are cover by the blade coating. I own several of them, very good beater knives. Here are a list of some of their knives.

#16C2 TrailMaster Factory second 99.99
#38C2 SRK Factory second 49.99
#13RT2 Recon Tanto Factory second 49.99
#37CF2 Bush Ranger Factory second 49.99

NOT Stainless I know but very cheap.
Hope this helps.

I never knew what Factory Seconds meant.
How does this work? Do I have to mail order from the company, or do stores offer them as well?

Does SOG or Busse (or SR) offer refurbished versions as well?

I think you have to get them direct from Cold Steel.

I think SOG offers some also....direct from them.

I've got my Cold Steel catalog right here:

Customer Service: 805-658-0180

Good luck!

Given the criteria you've outline and your price ceiling, I'd go with the BK7. You may not have handled one of these yet, but I can tell you this is not some weenie can't-really-use-hard knife. It is well built and offers a great bang for your buck. I'd take it over my Ka-Bar any day of the week. It has become my #1 hiking fixed blade, even beating out my CRK fixed blade knives.

Schtik: The Cold Steel Recon Tanto seems pretty good. And it's available locally (Toronto) at a very good price, approx. CAN$91 at Lebaron. I don't have one myself, but I'm interested in the Recon Tanto and have handled the knife at the store. I like the knife and it's on my "want" list. And like I said, Lebaron sells them so you can handle it first.

Also, a while ago in March I posted that Nelson's Great Outdoors had a SOG Tigershark on sale for CAN$152. I don't know if the knife is still there, but it might be. Nelson's is on Dundas near Dufferin, 416-538-6278. Nelson's hours are sporadic, so call first.

Hey Marty123, that's awesome news.
Just in time too.

I did a search for Le Baron. I found 2 results: One in Missisauga and one in Markham, are those the stores you're referring to?

I'll head over t0 Nelson's as well this weekend. :D

Thanks for the heads up!

Hmmmm. I just went to Swamp Rat's website and saw the Camp Tramp advertised for $128.95. I have had one for a couple of weeks and like it very much! Chris

Schtik: They have 4 stores, Markham, Mississauga, Ottawa, and Montreal.
You can also go to www.lebaron.ca and order online, they take credit card, money order or certified cheque.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the SRK or Recon Tanto, but you might not like the handle.

I agree with the folks who are saying to go with a Becker. For the kind of situation you're looking at I'd probably pick the Brute (BK1) with the Combat Bowie (BK9) as runner-up and the Combat/Survival (BK7) in third place. Nothing comes close to the BK&T line in that price range.

The closest I can come to meeting your specs in stainless would be the Fallkniven A1 Surival Knife. It is as tough as you could want, but it's just a bit short at 6.3".

If you are limited by budget and not number of items I would recommend that you get one of the large Beckers and supplement it with a good folder. Either the Spyderco Native Lightweight or the Camillus EDC Enhanced can be had for around $50.

Schtik: Yes, Lebaron has those two stores in the Toronto area. You should call first to check if they have in stock what you're looking for, as they are often out of stock of some knives. Check both stores if you can.

Also, before going to Nelson's Great Outdoors you should call first to check on his hours as his hours are not regular.
