contemporary take on an excellent old tool design, here's what the Finnish designer has to say:
"I´ve been looking for a strong, heavy duty leuku for reasonable price for quite long time and i got fed up since there wasnt any commerfial/factory made ones so i managed to get one done by certain free-minded sami blacksmith from lapland. He did it just like i draw and explained it and it is quite nice, although i havent tried it so hard on anything yet but you can cut a stel nail with it,whittle 1/4" aluminium shavings and also, wood
Its made from ball bearing race steel, with special partial annealing, two different grinds, small portion in the front of handle for whittling and quite rounded convex in most part for chopping performance but the front, the tip,its having very sharp edge for opening game/skinning.The spine is sharp edged for fire steel use,and spines tip is sharpened a bit for cracking bones, opening rib cages of game etc.The 8mm diameter pressed thing...in front of handle,is for using the knife as upper bearing,on firebows drill.
Handles i did from dyed curly birch and the rivets are from copper pipe.Everything has raw finish that i like.
Total length 38.5cm
Blade length 23.5cm
Blade is 4 mm from the start of the sharpened part and its 6mm wide at "tallest" part of blade, and it gets thinner again towards spine.this is to get more mass on the part that hits the object first while chopping."
and when asked why a full tang instead of the traditional stick tang:
"full tang i choosed just for sake of trustworthy tool, ive broked several stick tang knives in harsh chopping.plus its easy to rehandle and if the handle slapbs break out there,i can still use it easily, unlike stick tangs, this is,however, matter of taste.
i like yto get funtion-over-form & beauty-through-funtion based tools.to me its all the same how many layers of different bones, leathers and woods you have stacked in your handle,it doesnt usually affect positively the reliabilty of knife in any way.but this is also matter of taste.my knives are tools for use,not ever to be kept in displays and as i hike alot alone in wilderness,up there in north its better to have bit overbuilt and raw, than nice looking and suspicious"
