..Ok, what would be some recommendations oon the best 6 or 7 in fixed blade for hiking and camping--general use?

Take a look at Brian Goode knives. I have two of his knives and they are top notch. His to the woods knife is perfect size and shape for any camping or hiking chores you may have. Add to that the fact he is a great guy to work and talk with and you have a perfect package....

...Ok, this is the deal, I have a specific Busse in mind but I may have to wait awhile. Can't seem to find what I want. Out of the others, besides Swamp Rat, do you guys recommend? SOG? Benchmade? Becker? any others? Keep in mind, I want the really big bucks to go towards my Busse, but say in the $250 and under range?

Check out Ranger Knives. My DT Camp Tramp, BK7, and RD7 are all great knives.

like he says all good knives

If weight is at all a consideration (you mention hiking) have a look at the Cold Steel SRK. As much knife as many other suggestoins, for a lot less weight.

what do u think a good blade length is for a camp/hiking knife? im thinking somewhere around 7.5 inches. anything a couple inches over that might look cool but seems like it will be overkill and get annoying to lug around any comments?

5-7 inches seems about right - light chopping power, but not too big to carry comfortably.

I agree that for a camp knife, 5-7" is ideal for me. For a hiking knife, I usually carry a Vic SAK Hunter with me, but have been known to slide a 3-4" fixed blade on the belt from time to time.

Well, when it comes to survival knife balde lengths, there is considerable debate, and probably always has been. I can tell you that the prototypical survival knife blade length is 7.5" however, what it comes down to is personal proficiency and ability. I find that, the more I go out and practice wilderness skills and living, the more I appreciate a longer blade. My current regular use survival knife is a Greco Explorer, which has a 9.5" blade. It can cut, chop, slice, basically anything I'd need it to do. I've even used it as an improv spatula! (worked surprisingly well, once I got the hang of it :D ) Point being, go with what feels like it will work for you. From where I sit, though, I like a long, stout blade that can handle all sorts of work and come back for more.

here's one no one has mentioned--BRKT Rogue Bowie--have owned one for awhile and is the best knife i have ever owned--feels great in the hand--excellent workmanship--and a customer service that is second to none-- :)
