Hike/Camp Knife

My suggestions are

BK&T#9 A lot of knife for the money.
TOPS Alaskan Harpoon, Hawk Recon, D.A.R.T Anaconda B.E.S.T , they are extremely well made.
Fallkniven A1 or S1 are always worth considering.
Buck Strider Solution is pretty robust and not too expensive.
Ontario RAT series are well thought of and not too pricey.

Hope this adds a few to the under consideration pot.

What makes a great survival/hiking/camp/utility knife is a matter of individual preference. Since what you would like to do is to get a good and somewhat inexpensive camp/hiking/utility knife that you can depend on and (I assume) would actually like to use while you can get the Busse knife you really want (you say want to save your money for a Busse Combat knife), you may want to consider these:

BK-7
CS SRK
Camp Tramp

They are three of the basic knives to have, that's why already all have been suggested. They are very dependable and as tough as production knifes can be. If you prefer a kraton handle, a Kydex sheath, or if weight is a factor, the SRK is your knife. If you prefer a Micarta handle, go for the BK-7. You can get Micarta handle scales for Becker knifes for $20.00 from Camilus. If you prefer a Resiprene C handle, if weight is not a problem, or if you would like to stay within the Busse knife family, the Camp Tramp is your choice.

My first very good to excellent 7" blade was a Randall 14 and was my go-to knife for 20 years. That was until I discovered Fehrman.

My first choice now in a 7" would be their First Strike at 7.5". I went with the Final Judgement because at the time I was convinced that longer was better. The 9.5" blade is a great wilderness blade, but it's a bit big to carry on a long walk. The 7.5" blade would be closer to just right, but I didn't get one; the Peace Maker is much easier to carry -- smaller, lighter and still very tough.

Well is weight an issue? If so the Cold Steel SRK is a good choice for wight and price. If you want something better the Camp Tramp or RAT 7 is a good choice, but the weigh more. I think the Natural Outlaw would be a good choice too.
