What makes a great survival/hiking/camp/utility knife is a matter of individual preference. Since what you would like to do is to get a good and somewhat inexpensive camp/hiking/utility knife that you can depend on and (I assume) would actually like to use while you can get the Busse knife you really want (you say want to save your money for a Busse Combat knife), you may want to consider these:
BK-7
CS SRK
Camp Tramp
They are three of the basic knives to have, that's why already all have been suggested. They are very dependable and as tough as production knifes can be. If you prefer a kraton handle, a Kydex sheath, or if weight is a factor, the SRK is your knife. If you prefer a Micarta handle, go for the BK-7. You can get Micarta handle scales for Becker knifes for $20.00 from Camilus. If you prefer a Resiprene C handle, if weight is not a problem, or if you would like to stay within the Busse knife family, the Camp Tramp is your choice.
