Hike, Fatwood, New Gear, Broken Gear, Fire....

Nice pics Snakedoc. I love that your getting out and practicing with your gear. Those packs look nice for day hikes.

I've been working my butt off and need to get some dirt time! Thanks for sharing!

What part of Washington are you from? I've been wanting to go out into the woods but no one wants to go with me. Heck if you guys are open to it, I would love to tag along. BTW what area did you guys do this hike?

Thanks Brother! The pack is great. I picked it up at the WA State SAR Conferance for about half the list price as it was lightly used. It holds my ten essentials and has plenty of room left for additions to my kit.

Hope you are able to get out soon, it sure makes everyday work life a lot easier when you can take some time to get out. Sure helped me clear my head! Once we got back to the truck I felt really good about our hike, I began to wonder why I ever stopped hiking.

Take care.
:)

From Vancouver. We were hiking out near Bonneville Dam.

Often times River-8 puts on a little get together on Sundays where we get out into the Gifford Pinchot Nat Forest for some trees-n-quiet!! Everyone is welcome to join the fun. Here is a link to a recent post from River-8:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786393

Once a year in August there is a get together North of Carson, WA in the Gifford. It is called The Great NW Mischief. Folks come from OR & WA to get together and play in the woods, talk knives and live on the very edge of survival:D. Usually folks head up on Friday night and stay till Sunday, some folks go earlier, some folks just show up for a day. It really is a ton of fun and again, everyone is welcome!!

Get in touch if you feel like getting together.

So at least three demerits for the broken saw, which is no biggie compared to the 42 points for a cool hike and a great post :D !!!

Wanna come out and play Sunday, Noon at the EOC (working on a new F.A.G. Rig:o)?!!

Anyone else...?

Cheers,
8

Great pics, but not great for the saw. Glad it didn't bite you more, could have been bad.

I can live with three demerits!! :D

That sounds good, I'll see if I can get my chores done today so I can get out tomorrow!

Beautiful country!

I have broken my fair share of saws doing the same thing, I don't know if i will ever learn...

Those saw cuts are the worst eh...

I'm up here too Krazichinaman. I'd need some heads up for free time (which is not much right now) but I'd love to get out and do a hike or two.

Nice shots, love the last one off the first post! Take care of that hand! I suppose of the gear you took, the saw was about the only possible one that could break :D Take care!

Those are some great pics! That's to bad about your saw, but as you said good thing it happened when you weren't at a point where you were depending on it. Like the other guy said earlier cutting on the pull stroke will keep that from happening. Looks like you had a great time and glad to hear your hand made it out OK. :D

Also try keeping a tiny bottle of WD-40 in your pack and spray it on your saw during use. Learned that trick from Nutnfancy and it indeed makes a big difference. I don't know if it would have prevented the blade from breaking but I know it does make sawing a lot easier.

Just curious, were you able to get water boiling in that plastic bottle?

Man that sucks. Sorry to see that. Atleast you had sum busses withu./ You are a lucky dude to live were you do. Those are awesome pictures. THanks fer sharing.

Well hot damn I didn't know there were so many of us here in good ol' Vancouver. I'm hiking up in the Gifford Pinchot and all over Larch Mtn., Grouse Vista/Silver Star... at least once a week. Shoot I've probably seen you guys around already.

Have you guys ever hiked Silver Star? If you haven't you would be in for a real treat! Its a hell of a hike that takes you up past the tree line and into some awesome terrain passing Pyramid and Sturgeon Rock. Maybe one of these days we'll have to set something up..

G'day Snakedoc

Broke it while trying to harvest a big chunk of fatwood. It was on the trek out, I was tired and was just trying to cut too fast.

I feel for the lose of a usefull tool :(

At the risk of sounding like a smarta$$, I've got to ask the following question.

Can you now see the benefit of using a tool as it's design intended it to be used, rather that the often cited internet mantle of "indestructible"? :D

If it has, then the cost of the learning exercise has been worth the lesson learnt

If it hasn't, then IMO it will cost you a lot more before you learn what it's all about

Kind regards
Mick :D

Thank you for the tip about the WD40, sounds like a great idea!

The water did start to boil a little, not a rolling boil but we were in the process of packing up and leaving when we started to mess with that. We didn't really give it enough time but it seemed like it would work a time or two before the need for a new bottle.

Hey Mick,
Thanks for your reply!

To answer your questions:

I have used that saw plenty of times as it was intended, never once thinking that particular tool was "indestructible."

In my original text you will find that I did indeed learn a valuable lesson.

"My lesson learned was to slow down, be calm and mindfull of what I am doing. These task are no issue when I am not tired or fitigued. If I were in a real situation where I had to depend on my saw I would have been in a world of hurt. Gotta just slow down and take your time when doing certian tasks. I don't feel too bad about the saw as I was about ready for a new blade anyway (safe queen as you can see) but taking it more of a wake up call. Glad it happened when I wasen't really depending on it."

Thanks again for the reply,
Take care.
