Hike in Big Basin (11miles; 8hours)

My wife and I had our first date walking the sunset trail and a picnic.
That area of the coastal range has some of the oldest redwoods in California.
They are magnificent to look at and think that when Jesus was walking around they same trees were here and growing. When the Normans invaded England these trees were teenagers. Puts time into perspective.

Cheers, Shane

Wow Nick! Your pictures turned out great! I'll try to post some non-redundant ones, though many of mine turned out blurry because I didn't use the tripod very often.

I'm glad I got to meet up with some fellow BF members for this hike; it was great to finally meet Boomstick in person (great guy! Full of awesome info, man I learned a ton yesterday!) and Stingray's other half (the prettier half I'd say...oh Snap!). You'll have to join us next time Mike so you can show us your favorite secret spots along the trail :D

I fell in love with Big Basin yesterday, that place is simply ethereal. My goal was to check out the falls with all the rain we've been having, and it did not disappoint us  I'm looking forward to more hikes with Stingray, Boomstick, and Mtnfolk Mike in the future.

You know you can camp up top above the trail that goes down the falls.

You're right billym, Sunset Camp, Boomstick has stayed there a few times too.

To delay no longer, the pictures!

Great company:

Nick descending one of the falls...it was pretty scary looking down from the top! You really had to make sure you had a good grip on the guide wire going down...

cool pics Russell... i love that place this time of year... it's crazy during the summer..

Thanks guys, but stay tuned for the other guys' pics.

Mike, you do this all the time? My legs are totally shot from this hike, but then again, I am pretty out of shape. rksoon was putting us to shame though, poor guy had to keep stopping to wait for us...

i've done that hike at least 50 some odd times... :o we usually manage to do it a few times a year... but back in the day, i used to work for a few local summer camps, i used to lead climbing/backpacking trips for inner city kids.. we did the big basin to the sea trail (from HQ to hwy 1) once a week and the skyline to the sea trail once a month.... that one is 32 miles...:)
Jocelyn used to work in Big Basin for years too... she knows the park well..

Great pics fellas! That looks like a helluva beautiful place!

Thanks for posting those!

Right, I wanted to get started early because I thought it might get more traffic later in the day; turns out there were very few people out on the trails with us yesterday. Definitely the best time of the year to go (right after rainy season)

Right Mike, I remember you telling me you and your wife had tons of experience in that area (sorry I forgot to mention it Nick, I thought it was new only to me :D). Next time you and Boomer have to guide us for sure! Maybe get a little intro climbing in too... :)

Of course there was plenty of steel. From top: Case Texas Jack, Falkniven F1, Rehandled Mora, Fiddleback, Bark River Bravo 1, Knife made by me, RAT Izulu?, A pair of SAKs, and a pink kershaw leek.

That little guy in between the F1 and the Rehandled Mora is Boomstick's, I can't remember the name now, but maybe he'll chime in with it. And close stingray, Izula :p:)

Ahh man that is some beautiful area, Rksoon, If I ever get some vacation time, im calling you!:D

Haha, Mike or Boomstick know the area very well; I'm still in the exploring stage. But sure man, definitely drop me a line (or stingray, he lives a lot closer to Big Basin than I do, and loves to hike) and we'll hit the trails  :D

Thanks for posting the pics rksoon. Yours came out great, and vivid! Yeah, I had a lot of blurry pics too, it's hard to get decent hand held pics in those woods, 'cause it's so dark.

Mike, you and Josline will definitly have to try and come next time, you could be tour guides! lol. If you can handle waiting around for us couch pototoes that is... Even if you bring the kids, that would be cool, if they are up for it.

Didn't have time to take these pics earlier (hope this is ok stingray, didn't want to start a whole separate thread), but check out these flys Boomstick gave me as a gift, he tied them himself!!:thumbup::thumbup:(He also gave me a bottle to make stove out of, and a paracord and leather rock sling, but I didn't snap pics of em):

the little one was made by a guy by the name of zingzong.

Right on Boomer, thanks for posting the rest of the pics.

rksoon, hang out with us long enough and you'll be fishing in no time. Boomstick makes some nice flies, as you can tell.
