Well my RC-4 arrived yesterday and as much as my excitment to play with it, my daughter had her jazz concert that night and I ended up seeing her play with the University jazz band. It was a great night, but I was forced to dance which provides a great deal of comic relief to my former students that were also there.
First a couple comparison shots with one of my custom knives that are similar - a Jeff Diotte who is a knifemaker that lives in my hometown. I guess I have a certain aesthestic mindset on blade shape...
The handle ergonomics swing towards being slightly better on the Diotte. They are just a touch longer and thicker and the finger groves fit me like a glove. Of course Jeff is known for his awesome ergo's. That said, the RC-4 feels really good in the hand. It is nice and compact, yet it doesn't feel like there is any lack in handle length. The mircata doesn't have the warm feel of wood, but it is very tactile and bombproof. One of the reasons I wanted the RC-4 was to have a more rugged user knife. I also have really grown to love carbon steel.
This morning I took a walk out to Ojibway prairie park and decided to play with the new toy for a bit. It was a bit swampy with all the snow we've had the past two weeks. This is how a lab chooses to cross swamp.
And here is how a springer-mix does it
Lots of deer tracks and scat on the trails..
The RC-4 is pretty darn photogenic as bearthedog and horndog have taught us!
