hiked with the esee-4 & junglas earlier this week.

you should check out the Pine Barrens - some nice hiking in the area.

Nice pics! I need to get me a Junglas.

Next time step on that spider! Before it gets to the children! That thing looks big!

Great pics! "with nj/ny having the toughest gun laws i figure any sheeple seeing such a large knife would freak out just as well" yah, I had to do that before packing through local Irvine area wilderness, however I've run across a few people who instead of running for fear, were curious about it!

I had one guy near the wetland/swampy mud areas near the beach, say he wanted to get something like that quality, and that he saw some long-ens at ace hardware, home depot, turners, but he said none of the offerings instill quality or durability or long lasting...

on his iphone i entered knife works site, and a few others, stating they are all great vendors! great shipping times, and the knives come from a great company that actually stands behind the products. im hoping to see him chime in here, he said he'd join these forums when he finally got his knife, I wonder if hes serious :) cause than +1 for the converted :D

Just a Q but what kind of camera are you using?

NY has tough gun laws, but it's also a very rural and wooded state. We like our guns and have lots of 'em. Most places you can hike aren't shocked by knives, but ones like the junglas will get noticed. I've worn 8 inch kabars and my rc6 publicly in state parks, no trouble from the rangers or park police, whom I've talked to while wearing them.

thanks, guys. i'm proud of that shelter! and it only took me two hours to build it from scratch :p you think if i show it to the esee guys they'll reward me with a lifetime supply of esee knives? :D

I am so going to quote you all day long..."and being filipino, the second thought was- is it edible?" lol

Nice review.

Rob

i have my dad and my grandma to thank for always bringing us ant eggs and other bugs for dinner whenever we went to the province for summer vacation. i actually crave them the way i crave sushi :D

by the way, i left that tasty looking critter alone. that's her reward for being brave and coming right out at me after i disturbed her home. besides, after all the calories i burned off building that awesome shelter, i had to replace it with good ol' cheeseburger and fries.

I need to get out more....
I am located in Middlesex county and I don't know too many places to go in the state..yet. Where in NJ is that?

there are tons of state parks in our area! harriman/bear mountain just across the border into ny, high point, wawayanda, and stokes state forest are the parks i've hiked so far. here's a good site to get started: http://www.nynjtc.org. pick up a trail map and it'll show you the places where you can park and where all the shelters are located: http://www.nynjtc.org/catalog/maps

you can also go to ramsey outdoor or campmor (rt 17 north in paramus). they sell the trail maps as well. for the nj parks, you can also stop-by the park office and grab a free brochure of the park since it also contains the trail map. pm me if you'd like more info.

all the folks i've come across on the trail have been friendly. i guess coming from the gun world in this state, i've learned to be extra paranoid :o

i used my 8 yr old nikon coolpix 8700. i've been meaning to buy a small point and shoot for hikes since this one is on the heavy & bulky side. more often than not i missed out on taking pics because i didn't want to take the camera out of the pack. it's always a toss up between buying a small camera or another knife...the knife side seems to keep winning - i just ordered an esee lite machete :o

thanks. i frequent the harriman/bear mountain parks so that's good to know...and you guys aren't as bad as nj for sure. i'm jealous of your pre-ban ar-15 laws. i'm stuck paying twice as much for neutered 15-round mags

thanks for the compliments, guys. i knew i couldn't get away with posting pics of unused esee knives for long. hopefully the ban hammer has been averted :D

That shelter looks like one of the Civilian Conservation Corps-built ones. Harriman, perhaps? I'm in westchester county and hike in Harriman as often as I get a chance to. Lots of nice trails all around here (NY and NJ). Great pictures. Thanks for sharing!

JV3 Thanks For the Great Pics! The Knife Looks Great I may have to Get My hands on One! Thanks and again, Oh Great Shelter too!

You know that with ESEE warranty that just means one knife, right?

Fantastic close up pic of the arachnid! Thanks for sharing your outing with us. Makes me want to throw my pack in the truck and head out for some hiking. Also makes me want to buy some more knives. :D

Haha your comment on the spider makes me think of the joke:

How do you know Adam and Eve weren't asians?

They would have eaten the serpent instead of the fruit of the Tree =p

Great pictures. I really enjoyed them. I REALLY loved that close up of the spider, and so did my nephew. He's a big bug lover.

That reminds me of another joke.

Adam is in the Garden and walking around bored and lonely. God comes down to him and says Adam, how are you doing?

Adam says God, I'm doing okay, but I sure am lonely. Can you make me a mate like all the other animals have?

God says, well Adam, let me think about it and I will be back.

A few days later God shows up with this PERFECT woman, and says here you go Adam. Try her out and let me know what you think of her, and I'll be back in a week or so.

A week later God shows up and says well Adam, how do you like the women I created for you?

Adam says God, she is the GREATEST thing you have ever created. I am so happy and so thankful for her. Tell me God, what is she going to cost me?

God says well Adam, she is My greatest creation and she isn't cheap. She's going to cost you an arm and a leg.

Adam says WOW GOD, that's pretty expensive.......so um, what can I get for..........let's say a rib?

there are different variations, so 30 or so knives? one of each would be nice :D

so did you eat the spider? great post awesome pics.

left it alone. see comment above.

we eat all kinds of things but the weird thing is i've never actually seen anyone in the philippines eat a snake before. when i was a kid i found a snake in my parents' bedroom near the window. my dad killed it with a shovel and burned it for good measure! i guess superstition plays a big part in our culture too although i'm not at all superstitious.

i went on another hike after this one and i saw a lot more critters on the trail! your nephew will love it. i'll post it in the coming days after i sort through it.
