Hiker vs Black Bear in Kentucky

I just hate to see any excuse for W&SS to turn political. :)

is everything unrelated to W&SS unacceptable or just politics? It's kinda like when posts here are utterly NOT related to W&SS. Running shoes for example... seems kinda "General" to me - though i'm not a Mod. I suppose they *could* be W&SS related - if you open up the concept of "related" wide enough anything would be acceptable - as per house "rules".

I agree - i don't want politics to invade this Forum either. There's enough of that constant drivel elsewhere. bleh.

I know many "leftists" who would be happy to see that bear turned into a rug in front of somebody's fireplace.

It's bad enough that we have to put up with the ridiculous political stereotyping and closed-minded partisan bashing and name-calling in the politics and current events boards. That sort of drivel has no place here in W&SS.

I'm very happy to see bears becoming established in many of their former territories, and also happy to see any problem animals killed swiftly. I appreciate nature's beauty, but I also appreciate the fact that we put our opposable thumbs to good use to climb to the top of the food chain, and am a big fan of making sure those animals maintain a healthy fear of the scary humans with the big loud boom sticks. I'll admire them as long as they aren't admiring the dinner in my pack.

or the "dinner" which is carrying a pack :D

By the way, is it a good idea to baton through a bear or just kill it some other way?

Batoning a beer is not knife abuse, it's just unnecessary. The knife should be able to push through the little tin can without batoning.

I thought this was an interesting excerpt from a site I found when researching "bear deterrents" -- and it validates what the guy says at the end of the article, which also made me chuckle:

Bears seem to experience moods much like we do; they can be shy, curious, pushy, or aggressive, and can possess other attributes that we can identify as humanlike. Each time you get close to a bear, you encounter a specific individual that may behave differently from any other individual you have ever met before or will ever meet again.

:thumbup:When my Dad was a youngster growing up in Northern Minnesota, he recalls grampa always telling him as he went out the door to head into the woods ....... "Don't forget the shotgun and ammo in case you run up against a bear".
How times (and common sense) have changed.

Wow! Two whole days! Gee, wonder why??? :D
(Don't worry, Nancies, I'm not "going there"!)

There arre plenty of Bear in my neck of the woods...Guy up the holler from me shot a blackvear off his porch a couple of months ago....The Game Wardens were not Happy:grumpy: I agree....carry atleast a 4" fixedblade & if possible a handgun ;) I don't think a walking stick would stop a charging bear, he wuold use it for a toothpick after he finished his meal :D

Here we go and work our butts off to hunt a species to extinction, or near extinction, in Kentucky only to have the green weenies redeposit that species right back here for us to have to kill the hell out of all over again.
I'm writing a congressman about this insanity. I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain and invent guns and knives to have to put up with nuissances.

:D

Actually the KDFWR guys and gals brought in a couple of bear dogs from out of State and tracked this bear for miles. Last I heard it was near Beattyville. The dogs finally gave out, but as near as they could tell that individual bear was 17 miles away. They reopened Red River Gorge and all of natural Bridge State park for the 4th of July weekend. Rhe Park is on one side of the Mountain parkway and the Red river George area on the other contingent to the Daniel Boone Federal Forrest. There was some indication (double red ear tags) that the bear was a "problem" bear that had been trapped and released in the Great Smokey Mountains park. black bears are great travelers it seems, as long as the grub is good they don't care where they are. The KY A-field Calendar for June had a wonderful photo of a black bear eating blackberries. :D

I've hiked in the gorge many times and spent several nights camped out there, all with no sight or sound of a bear. I actually worry more about them down around the Rockcastle area. I guess that's changed now. No hiking in the gorge for me without some kind of pepper spray for now on. I know it's still 1 in 100k that I would ever have to use it, but you never know. Of course I always hike with a belt knife, but I don't really want to even get close enough to one that a 5" fixed blade knife would come into the equation.

EDIT: Decided to see if I could find which trail it was, it was Pinch-Em Tight Trail. I'm pretty sure I know where that one is, but I've never hiked it. From what I remember it's sort of dead smack in the middle of the area, so that sort of sucks.

And for anyone seriously taking about how they need to eradicate the bears from the area again, let's start with the coons. They are a much bigger nuisance in reality.
