Hiking at night...

If I was not in a place I was familiar with, I would make different preparations. I know the area very well, and have hiked it in the dark several times. But you are right, the cheap stuff is good enough, until it isn't.

Sounds like fun. But yeah, a good flashlight is essential.

How are you liking that microstream? I've been wondering about picking up one of those for edc.

For an EDC it is almost perfect. It's a perfect size, it's comfortable to carry, plus the clip is pretty impressive. It has a dual something or other design pocket clip so it will clip onto your pocket, OR you can clip it onto the bill of your cap and it works as a headlamp. This only works if you wear a ball cap or something with a brim but it's still nice. Plus it is ridiculously cheap to pick up. I got mine for I think $14 on sale at the river store. I'm not the only one around here with one either. A lot of the folks here have picked them up cause they are so handy.

Once they try it out they understand why I have 4 different and two.more on thewat, haha...
Its addictive I tell you....

Addictive is doesn't begin to describe it. It can't be explained:P
I often find myself snooping around at aftermarket sheaths and scales for knives i don't even have.... Yet...

I allways carry way to big a loadout if i'm in an area i'm not familiar with. I ay have taken the "rather have it and don't need it, than need it and don't have it" term a little far. That way if i get lost or something comes up a really crappy situation can easily be turned into my own little camping trip.

My wife's said she's just waiting for that time when i call and tell her i probably won't be comming home that night.
And when that happens, i want quality gear with me.

That sounds awesome. Only problem i've found is that there's nobody selling it localy in norway. I've been checking out prices on ebay to, and it runs for about $20 but everyone charges $40ish for shipping.
I find that pretty funny concidering that i payed $12 to get my bk15 from the US to Norway:P

Totally agree, make no mistake.
You and one of my hiking buddies would get along great. He carried an IV on our last trip. Just in case someone needed it. He is like a magician. Think of something random, and say 'too bad we dont have this'. He will pull it out of his pack. I always hike with him, which will be great if we are ever stranded. 'Hey Chad, got a four wheeler in there?' :D I swear to you, on the last trip, I mentioned how great a ribeye would be after the first day of hiking. He had frozen two, and packed them in. They were wonderful.
