hiking boots vs. hiking shoes

Thanks Skammer,

I appreciate the advice. Take care of your dogs, and they will take care of you! I heard that piece of advice a long, long time ago. I'll check out what you suggested, I have a lot of trouble fitting my feet well into boots, always looking for a good brand.

I done alot of hiking and some backpacking with those sort of boots shoes. I grow up wearing those shoes.

The main problem with them is cold weather your feet would freeze. The best part in the shoes is the sole. I can walk on wet rocks twice i had to climb up a water fall for Geocaching and they stuck great. Also do alot of rock hopping and creek crossing for Geocaching. I guess its what we get used to. They also dont last very long as the sole wears out faster. But thats a trade off for very good grib. I heard from one guy that the sole on the new ones is not as good as they started to use diffrent rubber the last couple years.

I dont actually have hiking boots or shoes

I used to wear only sneakers , dunlop kt26 , till I couldnt get them in a big enough size anymore

now its makita work boots

I do not understand the thinking that says the boots I wear must be swapped over cos now Im hiking , instead of just walking and carrying stuff ...

but this is just my opinion .
Yup that's me, the boots I wear to the grocery store are the same ones I wear hiking. Plus, every time I go out I seem to get scratches all over them no matter how benign the trail so I'm sure I would bang myself up wearing soft tennies.

On the other hand my buddy wears chacos. But then again that's what he wears every day unless it's below freezing.:D

I would prefer shoes because I mainly do one-day hikes or do hikes abroad - it is very tiring to travel in boots. Shoes are lighter, better ventilation. I do not carry much weight any more so I can cover longer distances in lighter shoes.

Regardless of where I go, I wear my Danner Striker GTX 8"...I personally prefer boots...Better grip, last longer, keeps ya dry, etc

Most of my footwear is custom made for me as I have wide feet, around EE width, and I don't care for an insulated boot. I have had very good luck with the current US desert boots both the hot desert and cold desert versions. My normal day to day boots for logging or working cattle are Whites boots. The fit is amazing though a little break in was required. I have 4 pairs of Whites, 3 different styles. My oldest pair date from 1986 and are still going after 3 rebuilds. I wear these for pretty much everything except backpacking. For backpacking I wear desert boots and carry Vasque water shoes for camp.

Once read (Colin Fletcher for oldtimers like me) that one pound on your feet is like 5 lbs on your back. i used to be a boot person. Switched to shoes and have no regrets. I have started using a walking stick for added balance, checking out those iffy looking rocks etc
