Hiking Buddy & some farm pond Bluegills

Awesome thread Matt! It makes me miss fresh Bluegill. I am hoping to get to a local pond for some fishing this summer. It has been a while since I had fresh Bluegill, the last time was completely impromptu when I thought up a series of shots for an article I was working on years ago :)

Man that's awesome! I love bluegill, one of my favorite fish. Fun to catch those bruisers on a light fly rod! Thanks for sharing Westy.

I'm glad this thread brought back memories for so many! Bluegill fishing with my grandpa was one of my favorite things growing up as a kid, my only regret is I didn't get to do it nearly enough before he passed (I was only 9 when he left us). Dad and I always continued on with the fishing after grandpa was gone and now I'm waiting to pass that on to Evan. He got his pole last year at 2 and caught a few and enjoyed it but this winter something sparked interested in fishing and that's all he talked about all winter long. I'm glad he was able to land a few, I wish I had that first one on video, he was hooping and hollering like crazy that he had a fish on.

Fishing, camping, hunting and the love for knives are just a few things I'm hoping to pass on to my little one.

Brian - thanks for sharing those pictures! I can only imagine how wonderful that bluegill tasted over the open fire and to get one by spear is awesome! My goal next camping trip to to catch and cook some up like this.

Since everyone seems to be loving the fish pictures here are a handful from previous years at the pond.

Big 'ol male...

Chunky...

Another big 'ol male

Sometime they hit even when you are going after the bass!

My favorite rod is an Avid Series St. Croix rod paired up with a Shimano CI4 Stratic reel - from bluegills to bass, this rod is fun to use...

Finally my two favorite pictures of bluegills - the first just because I love how it turned out, the second was last year, Evan's official first fish.

Thanks for tuning in!

again, great stuff!

One of the things we did was dapping for blue gills.

We used a really long cane pole and tied a long fuzzy bit of twine to it, then a leader of light test fish line with a dry fly attached to it. We'd stand with our back to the wind and let the breeze catch the twine and make the fly dance on the surface. Drives em crazy and sometimes gets them to jump out the water.

No baiting hooks and we'd crimp the hook's barb closed and it makes it easier to get the fish off (and easier to lose).

It was fun simple and effective.
