Hiking, killer bees, knives, scenery--oh my!

Great pics Reuben! Never hiked that particular area before. Fortunately neither of you is allergic to bee venom.

When I was a kid I used to play with bees all the time (and got stung plenty of times), especially after seeing a "bee beard" on Ripley's Believe It or Not! Years ago I was soloing in Montana's Lolo National Forest and when I stepped over a log I stepped right into a bees next. They chased me all the way down to Rock Creek, where I dove into the too shallow river and got banged up on the rocks. I received 60-70 stings, mostly concentrated on my wrist and neck. I was fortunate not to have a reaction, but a few years ago I was stung by a yellow jacket and had to drive to the hospital as my throat started to close shut. The docs said that the more you're stung the more likely you are to get an allergy (so much for the Dread Pirate Roberts and building up his immunity to Iocaine Powder!) and the multiple stings years earlier probably did it. Now I have to carry an Epi-Pen with me.

Oh, yeah and what Tinbasher said. Use a knife edge or if you don't have a knife on you (Ha!) then you can use the edge of a credit card to scrape the stinger away. The poison sack is ripped out with the stinger and if you use tweazers then it injects the rest of the venom into you.

Hey guys trust me---I wanted pictures but they were all over us. I had to cover her up and take a few for the team. We just rounded a bend and saw a cave like hole about 7-9 feet away and that was it. The sound was incredible, her panic was unreal and the terrain did not allow us to do anything but run in the direction of the trail. In her panic she fell and instantly was being attacked. We got a good 1/8 of a mile away before the sound stopped but she had bees stuck in her hair so that freaked her out even more as the sound never stopped playing on her fears of still being attacked. I had to actually pull them out with my fingers to remove them from her pig tails. I wish I would have saved the stingers because they were long, but, I had to calm her down and then watch her to for signs of not only shock, but, any kind of reaction too. I really couldn't use a knife blade to remove them from her because she was not still at all. It would have cut her for sure. My stings felt like fire but I don't have a reaction to anything ever! After even the next 4 hours of hiking she was feeling muscle pain. All she could do is drink water and plan her next battle for we would surely have to go back the same way. Another point is this, she lost her (my) neck knife in the twisting and flailing about. I heard a quick "ching, cling" and then that silence of, no knife. I had a SAK and TOPS so we were well equipped but she was more set on finding that knife because it was mine. The truth is, I like knives, but, i am not emotionally attached to tools!
