Hiking kit

I don’t have a stove. Now, I need one! 🤣🤣🤣
I have been using the cheap Life Straws from the auction sites. On long hikes in Glacier we were the popular kids because everyone was out of water and asked to use our filters.

I have a few of those tucked away in various packs as well. The Sawyers with the squeeze bag too.

I have to ask… what boots or shoes do you wear? That’s a very important part of your kit!

I'm testing out the topo traverse hiking shoes. So far, worth every red cent. The wide toe box area that is shaped like your foot isn't a gimmick, it's awesome. I wish all shoes were foot shaped. I only have 7.5 miles of moderate trails with some decent climbing here and there.

Any fans of the SAM split?
I keep thinking of adding one, but I’m not sure if I break a leg or arm how much it’d matter. An arm because I can still walk, and a leg because I can’t walk anyway.

I wear Keens at work. I am a mailman and walk all day. I heard Oboz are supposed to be better. In July I took a new pair of these Oboz to Montana. The right one slowly disintegrated over a few days. The left one was perfect. My worn out Keens saved the trip. Oboz replaced the pair with the ones in the pic. I haven’t had any problems with them. Both brands have a larger toe box like yours.

Another item I have learned to love is some of these in my pack…… 12 + hours of glow!

I do have a flashlight in there but this gave me an idea. I have one of these tooblight things just sitting around doing nothing. Its not as bright as a glow stick but it doesn't go bad either. Thanks for the idea!

Your snakebite bandage and the super glue?

I have no idea if that would work.

They are light enough. Splints are easy if you are creative.
The creativity is there, I just don’t know if I want to be improvising my own splint. For other people I’d almost insist, and huck their SAM splints into the river just so I could get a high five from the Ambo guys.

Would you buy the oboz again? Stick to the keens?

My most carried knife while camping or hiking is usually a leatherman, 90% of the time and leatherman wave. Usually a mora goes with me in the car, and usually whatever normal knife I'm carrying comes along to, whether that's something traditional or modern. I'm a big backpacker starting from when I was a kid, I carried a leatherman kick for probably a decade. Nowadays I'm generally ultralight, I carried a small Opinel No.6 for many years, then a buck 112 slim select, then a mini bugout for a while. During my army days I carried a swiss army knife, along with the issued multitool. But the last 5 or so years I've been carrying the leatherman wave, with honorable mention going to a SAK pioneer and huntsman. I think a leatherman is a little on a heavy side for most people, but for me it's worth it just in case.
