I just had oral surgery and im taking vikadin i dont feel loopy or high but i have never been high before so i dont know. So my wilderness question is im going to be out of school for 3-4 days so do you think i could hike while on vikadin?

Well, that depends on how you are getting to the trailhead, how difficult the terrain is and if you are going to have somebody with you.. Also, exertion after oral surgery could potentially cause bleeding.. I'd go for it if the conditions were right and I felt ok.

I tore a disc in my back and was pain killers for quite some time. I cycled through a few different kinds.

It depends on your tolerance. If you really haven't taken them before, I'd say stay home especially in this weather.

My tolerance was pretty high at the time and I still woudn't feel comfortable hiking by myself while on them. Your judgement is completely off and you may not feel things you may have felt without them (fingers going numb, etc).

Be safe bro and a speedy recovery.

Take the pills and enjoy the feeling on the couch :)

Why don't you go in increments? You know take a half hour hike in the morning and see how you do. Make sure you are fed and well hydrated. Vicodin (Tylenol/Hydrocodone)is good pain medication but everyone responds differently to it. I'm pretty sure your prescribed dose is "one to two tabs every 6 hours as needed". What you can do is see if one Vicodin and one Tylenol will do the trick for you.

Oh yeah - I just read it's oral surgery. Did you have your wisdom teeth out? If that's the case you are only going to be on meds for a couple of days I'm sure you can stay out of the woods for a few days and be safe.

Or if you're really worried about the narcotics, just switch over to motrin/ibuprofen or else just regular tylenol. Motrin might not work as well for wisdom tooth pain (this is nerve pain) but a vicodin is basically 2 tylenols with some opiates in it. I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago and I was good to go the next day, didn't even have to take any of my vicodin until I drysocketed in all four teeth about a week post op. That was the worst pain I've ever been in and I've been through alot. I was popping vikes like breath mints, and the worst part was my mouth still hurt like hell. The vicodin didn't touch the pain, but the opiates made me not care as much. Listen to your doctor, because you do NOT want to drysocket.

Go for it.

Really, unless you are worried about falling off a cliff or something.

It wouldn't stop me.

Are you in pain? If not, don't take them.

As was said, it's all about what your tolerance is. There are little old ladies who you'd never know take percocet everyday, and young men who'd have to take a nap on them. Just make sure whomever you're hiking with (like a wife/significant other) knows about it before hand, and can make a judgment call where you can't. In other words, let your wife/etc decide for you before you leave so she can say whether you seem yourself.

Vicodin is a relatively mild narcotic analgesic. As long as you will not be by yourself, take the medication as prescribed, follow your doctor's instructions, and have fun.

well if you were my son, I'd kick your butt back to school if I found out you went on a hike while supposedly being bedridden after surgery :D

Actually don't push yourself too hard if you had your wisdom teeth out. First, your wisdom was just excised and you might be want to take silly risks. Second, pushing yourself too hard and not noticing because of the drugs can lower your immune system and allow infection to set in.

Take care!

Guys i just had a tooth taken out and a tooth exposed and without this meds i would be on the border of tearing. so im geting a sling shot tommarow so i will stay of my feet and practice shooting. Thanks for your concerns.

Dry socket is losing the clot that the Dentist so generously scraped the area to create for you. Don't use straws, don't drink liquids too hot or too cold and don't smoke which is like using a straw. Any of these things can make you lose the blood clot in the extraction hole. When you drink, don't sip, that's suction, try to kind of pour it into your face. ;)

If you DO lose the clot, oh, you will know quickly. :D

In that case, call your Dentist and if he doesn't offer it, ask him to pack it with packing and Oil of Cloves and to write you a RX for a few more Vicodin. The Oil of Cloves will provide instant relief. Guess how I found that out? :D
