Hiking shoes?

I just remembered the word for my stride problem. It's called Under-Pronation. Means I put most of the stress of my stride on the outside edges of my shoes. Can't seem to find a fix for it either. Most serious running shoe makers make corrections for over-pronators. But I don't see much for under-pronators.

It's also called supination, and with that word you can find some reviews of shoes for supinated feet.

I tend to pack pretty light, plus I have very strong ankles so I only wear trail runners, unless it's winter in the high country, even when I was a pro mountain guide. The old Army addage of 1 pound on the feet equals 3 pounds on the back is true and I find with lightweight footwear (and a lighter pack) I have much more energy at the end of the day and I can cover more miles. I also tend to be pretty hot, so typically I avoid Gore-tex and other waterproof models as they just don't breathe well enough for me. eVent is finally starting to be used in more and more shoes, so that may be just the ticket if you do need a waterproof shoe.

My favorite trail runners are from Montrail and I have owned 6 or 7 pairs, with my Hardrocks being my current favorite, but the Hurricane Ridges are great too. I wore 2 pairs of a discontinued model on a 900 mile trek in Japan and they were great! I believe that the first person to complete the Coast to Coast trail also wore a pair of Montrail trail runners.

As mentioned above Merrels are good and I liked by Stretch Chameleons. I also have one pair of Solamon's that I really like (XA Pro Comp, I think).

Go to your local outdoor shops and running stores and see what they have and start doing some research on the internet. Ultimately you need to find a pair that fit your feet and any foot issues you may have. The running stores can tell you what type of shoe you need based on how you pronate and also your weight.

Regardless, do yourself a favor and get a good pair of insoles from SuperFeet, Montrail or Soles.

I had good luck with a pair of Montrails. Unfortunately, I wore them out over the course of many years and they discontinued that particular model. I replaced them with a pair of Solomans and have been real happy so far.

Merrel Moab low's. they come in Goretex/non-goretex, are comfortable out of the box, allow the use of orthotics, are tough as nails, and only about $80.

I have the same walking problem as infi-del and walk on outside of my feet so I wear the outside edges of shoes out quickly. Also because I wear sandals a lot in city like everyone does here it does give me some foot problems. Anyway with regards to hiking, if I am in wet or mountainous terrain when I hike in jungle I wear New Balance running shoes, and on dry, level ground Hi-tec Magnums. They are both fine for me and besides finding good hiking boots here that fit me would be really difficult. However I have heard many good things about Merrell boots.

I wear Nike Running shoes for hiking often. Running shoes have an aggressive tread . Nikes hit me better than other shoes.

I'm going to put in another good word for Merrell. I've got their boots and sandals and I love 'em! But of course, the most important thing is they work for you, so don't forget there are a lot of other great shoe companies out there.

I've worn Merrell Chameleon Wrap GorTex XCR's for the past 4 years-ish. I'm on my second pair, and I wear them every day, but also backpacking, hiking, etc.
