Ive been using collapsible Leki ski poles for over twenty five years, long before they were even marketed as hiking poles. Used to get some strange looks, now, everybody uses em.
They provide relief for the knees and add an extra measure of stability. I feel weird doing any kind of serious hike without them now.
Although my Lekis are still in good shape, I may try out some of the new shock absorbing ones. My retros are really unique now though.
As many people have mentioned, they are also useful for probes, self defense, brush clearing, etc.
I also use mine in place of poles for my UL rain tarp when I am backpacking.
