My friend and I are going to hike part of the A.T. at the end of March. We're going to start at the bottom in GA and see how far we can get in four days. Have any of you guys done part or all of it? Anyone done the GA-NC section? Any tips (pertaining to the trail, not hiking tips) spots worth noting for any reason? I've done the lower section that we'll be on twice before, but that was before I found this forum so I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on anything that someone else might know of. Also, when I did it was about 8 years ago so I don't know if there have been any changes to the trail since then. Plus it would just be nice to hear a few experiences.

I have read Bill Brysons book " A walk in the woods " does that count ?:D

I live about 9 miles from the start of the trail. The Georgia part can/is pretty rough terrain. Although I have also done parts of TN and NC as well. There is nothing spectacular about the Georgia section in my opinion, but it is a workout. There are also 4 or 5 places to be picked up if you change your mind or you can drop a vehicle off in a parking lot if you want to take 2 vehicles and then double back to Amicalola.

Remember that Blood Mt was where that SOB Hilton kidnapped that young lady. So be careful.

Good Luck.

I've hiked a good amount in the mountains of NH and a bit in Maine, but haven't done the whole thing yet.... That's still two summers away! Have fun on your trip!

Blood Mt was no fun even before that. Can you get to Helen in 4 days? It has been so long that I don't remember.

You can get to Helen in 4 days. I am 62 and it is a bit of a stretch for me. I would certainly not over pack. And I would not do it till late spring, summer or fall. JMO.

Old age is not fun, but I guess you are as young as you feel.

Good Luck.

I've done most of NC, just did mt. rogers (in VA)again a few weekends ago. Stop and check out mt. rogers, it is like an alpine forest

Mt. Leconte in the smokies is a fine view too, but you really won't be hurting for any views up there. When you are near the linville gorge area, check off the trails for liquor cashes. Its like an unspoken rule to leave any liquor you haven't finished a little off the trail around that place. At any point along the AT in NC (maybe in GA too), watch out for the shelter mice. They are complete @$$holes. They've taken the fill out of my sleeping bag to make a nest, raided my friends arcteryx pack by chewing holes, cut the bear bag line to get to the food on the floor. They don't hibernate. They are mutants.
When are ya'll going.

There is also a hidden trail off of The AT near mt. leconte I can give you quardinates too. It goes from a campsite straight up to the top, lots of fun, there is an ANCIENT cairn going up to it. An engineering buddy thinks it was an old logging access point then carved out by a creek.
