Vacation day spent roaming the woods; nice spring day hiking. Wildlife was plentiful...deer, turkeys and a snake, but I had the real beast with me...my ESEE RC-5...LOVE IT!:D

How do you like the RC5 ? I've been drooling over this thing since it came out but the thickness of the blade at such a short length keeps me away (to short for a chopper & to thick to be a slicer) But Everytime I see one I want one :p I don't care for serrations on a fixed blade, takes up to much useful blade IMO :D All-N-All it's a tough looking knife

Boy, that is a beast! Weather has been great down here...glad you made it out!

ROCK6

I have one and it is definitely not too short to be a chopper. Because of the thickness it packs quite a wallop, especially if you choke out on the grip. The saber grind helps thin out the edge a little too, so it can certainly bite pretty deeply.

Nice pics. The RC 5 looks like its at least 1/4" thick and it looks like it does a great job of splitting wood.

Nice work. Love my RC-5. It is always in my pack and iexcells at splitting wood. A good friend thinned and convexed the edge for me, so it cuts great as well!

It's a good chopper and it's very sharp, I wouldn't clean fish with it. I've used it for cutting meat in the field (deer), and on bone...even taking the hide off. I've never been a fan of the serrated blades; BUT I have found out that the serrations on the back of the blade can be useful...kind of nice to have that opption. I was torn between the RC-4 or the RC-5. I think I made the right choice. I use my IZULA for more cutting jobs.

Do you find that what you can't do with the RC5, you can do sufficiently with the izula? or do you feel you are missing a blade length somewhere in there? I would think it would be ok, but I'm not too sure.

Yes! the IZULA is a good knife for most cutting shores, I use it for a neck knife. I like it...it's well made, simple and easy to sharpen.

I have owned both. The difference between the RC-4 and the RC-5 is HUGE!!! They are night and day. The RC-5 has SO MUCH more steel and is MUCH heavier. They really are two very different blades used for very different tasks.

That's funny, because over the last 6 months mine has proved to be both an excellent slicer AND beater. It battons sweetly through almost anything and if you maintain a slicing edge, it will hold it. The only downside to the thickness I've come across so far is use as a draw knife, the saber grind is too wide to get as low of an angle I'm looking for, but that's OK because my machete does the job just fine. As far as the serrations go, I have serrations on my blade and the RAT design is superb-they are very low profile and sturdy and won't get in the way of battoning at all. They're handy for scraping tinder off of driftwood which is often the only source I can find in canyonlands.
