A buddy just called me up to see if I want to buy another anvil. Its a Hill, aprx 150 lbs, on a metal stand (casters for rolling it around, moving it) with a few tools. Supposed to be in good condition, might need to be cleaned up on the surface but no major dings. I never heard of a Hill before. Any idea if they are a good anvil and if so what it might be worth?

How much does he want for it. I've never heard of one of them.

Anvils of America is a good book. (I think thats the name)

I just checked in that book. Mr. Postman had recorded three Hill anvils. He notes that it seems to be a manufacturer name, and it is listed under the English Anvils section. He didn't have much info on them other than describing them, but they are marked Hill
Birmingham
with the weight on the other side.
Not sure if this helps.....The one pic he has is of a rather thick waisted 177 lb with a fairly short horn.

Hi guys, thanks for the info. I think it can be had for short money as the man that owns it is getting on in years and is moving soon. Maybe I will go have a look and throw an offer at him.

Justin, email me if interested, I have info. Two others are also interested so first come first served..............

sent an email through hte board, but hafl the time it doesnt work for me, if you didnt get it, add @gmail.com to the end of my username and toss me an email.

Thanks =)

I have a Thomas Hill anvil. Mine says Sheffield on it, rather than Birmingham. I sent pics to Postman, he sent back a letter. He said I have the only documented Thomas Hill anvil in North America. Mine is about 135#, butt ugly, but the face is live and sound. The nice added feature is that it doesn't ring like my Hay Budden.

gene,:D this is buzz. i have been hunting for forging tools. so far i managed to acquire at auction a real nice
Royal Western Chief blower .:D works great. no cracks or damage of any kind.
also found at local flea markets , two nice leg vises with all parts intact. paid $12.50 for one,so i could'nt pass it up.
i do need a 100-125lb. anvil. know of anybody who might have a spare anvil for trade or sale please let me know. thanks,
otherwise i will make do with a chunk of iron in a five gallon bucket of cement.
buzz
if i go to auction tomorrow i might be able to snag another leg vise for cheap.

So he's the one who bought it? I was talking on the phone with the fellow who sold it, and someone had called him 10 minutes before I did and was getting first dibs on it, i had 2nd dibs but the first person bought it ! >_<

That was a good buy/steal for someone who can use it! Hope it finds a new home with an aspiring bladesmith!
