Congratulations, ndog. I had a feeling you would go for this one. It's a big brother to one by Sher that I got (via auction) early this year. One of my all-time favorite blades. Now that Sher has left HI I can't think of a better kami than Purna to make this blade.

Awesome blade you old dog! That is one impressive and powerful piece. It could be the center piece of any collection. Your giant bowies also hold the title as the coolest khuks around.

Thanks all! Yep that one has been on my pull the trigger no matter what list for a long time. Funny the little tag on the handle says sher ? Dont matter to me tho . Yall know Purna is a favorite too. I dont have the dd yet so it could be sharked?
Hmmm? Whats the proper way to remove it from its sheath?:D

Extremely carefully I'm thinking. Maybe have somebody else hold the sheath while you pull it out? Safety first ya know?

Well Kamidog, I was very reluctant to share this information with you as I know you might not be thrilled about it.

BUT, I'm your father.....................

Ha, bet you thought I was gonna say I stealth sharked your Vala didn't ya? Now that would have been serious.

I think you're supposed to dismember his hand before a revelation like that.

I didn't notice the "Sher" on the handle tag. Maybe Sher started this blade and Purna finished it after Sher left. Or maybe Sher did the first one of this design and had it named after him (until he left). It is different from the regular HI Spear Vala. This one has two fullers on each side, while the regular Spear Vala has no fullers.

I just did a test unsheathing mine. It is pretty snug in the sheath and requires a good pull to release, but of course it would not be safe to hold the sheath at the edges. What works is to get a good grip on the sheath high up near the mouth, where the blade is not sharpened. Once I pull the blade out an inch or two it slides out the rest of the way pretty easily so I can hold the sheath away from the edges.

It might be a little different for you, depending on how tight the sheath is, but as long as you hold the sheath near the mouth there are several inches of narrow blade that won't come anywhere near your fingers.

*** Warning added later: You have to be careful pulling the blade out of the sheath those first few inches. Kind of jiggle it out in small movements. Otherwise you might pull too far and cut the sheath or your fingers with the wide edges.

*** Special warning for ndog: You don't ever want to drop this blade on your bare feet.

Neato. It looks a lot like a smatchet.

It's more like a welsh trench sword without the folding guard.

You're right about the Giant Spear Vala. The "regular" HI Spear Vala looks a lot like the smatchet. Compare the following photo with Robin Shooter's picture:

This one is 14" overall length and 28 oz, probably a lot thicker and heavier than the original smatchet.

The Spear Vala is the knife I strap on when I want to carry a serious double edge blade. One of my all time favorites. This thing is fantastically terrifying monster. It's like a normal sized Spear Vala purposely exposed itself to radiation in order to go tow to toe with a Cherokee Rose.

Congrats:D
