These 2 are pretty much the same size. I took them to the backyard for a little comparison of chopping ability. The HI is a Dui Chirra by Bura. The CS is the Ghurka Light Carbon V.

A big difference in thickness.

First I chopped some small logs in half

Winner Dui CHirra by about 20 chops.


Next I cut some small branches.

Winner Tie. Stuff this size is no match for a blade this size.


Next I cut some medium sized branches.

Winner Dui Chirra took 3 good whacks.


Then I tried to see how far I could sink them into a old 2 X 4.

Winner Cold Steel gets a little deeper. The thicker HI wedged itself in.
 
Cut some 2 X 4's in half.

Winner Dui Chirra by a mile.


Both knives have convex edges. I found that the CS was easier to put exactly where you wanted it but the lack of mass just can't throw chips like the HI. The thin blade also tended to get stuck, never a problem with the HI. Although the CS is much lighter and easier to swing it really doesn't matter because you end up taking more swings to accomplish the same work.

I have had this Cold Steel for years. With the new handle and convex edge it is much nicer than it ever was. But it still cannot compare to a HI khikuri.
 
How many chops total for the small log? How many strikes on the medium sized branches?

Some perspective would be useful.

The log took about 45 for the HI, 65 for the CS.

The HI cut the medium branches in 3, 6 for the CS.

I was thinking somebody, maybe Yvsa had a CS and compared it this maybe was like 3 or 4 years ago on the HI forum and he pretty much came to the same conclusion.

I'd be interested to see how a Foxy Folly would stack up against the Cold Steel.

What is the weight on the CS vs HI?

A Foxy would do even better I reckon. I dunno what the weight of the Dui Chirra is...maybe 16-18 ounces?

The CS is good for light brush and such, but just doesn't have the heft and better geometry of the HI.
