Himalayan pen knife-anybody have one?

Here's an early one: crafted by Bura; carried by Sarge in Astan years ago; polished by dust from that deployment; and used by a woods-wanderer in Wisconsin. It has stood up well. Carries a lot of memories, as well as a sharp edge. :)

Here's mine. I originally tested it on a washing machine, because I'm not smart enough to turn down the option to hammer a khukuri point first through sheet metal. The spine took a couple small nicks, but the edge only dulled. Sadly a few weeks ago I rolled the edge a bit near the front when I accidentally dropped it point first on concrete. Clearly the damage was minimal, though. The sheath was hand made from only the finest duct dape; one of these days I'm going to have a proper leather sheath made for it. I stain and preserve the handle periodically with Ballistol, which is the same thing I use to keep corrosion off the edge.

Nice wallet. I was gonna beg for the Bura Pen Knife but I might get into a bidding war for the wallet.

I know the Bura is priceless with the history and such so I won't even ask. In fact forget I mentioned it.

In high school I made full duct tape pants and wore them all the time. I was a weird kid...

This thread has got me wanting a pen knife now as well. WHY CAN'T I HAVE THEM ALL AT ONCE?? Ugh, my wife would chop my arms off with an M43.

Yeah I do like the Bura Pen. I saw a Bura piece on the "marketplace" recently and this wallet was open but fortunately one of our own forumites now own it so I dont feel so bad. Was Hanshee like teardrop Khuk....I really wanted it... but im ok with it. I do like the finger grooves and am partial to the sheath myself. My colored duct tape collection burned down with my house but I still have remnants in my wallet! Soon as my 11.5 inch Sirupate grows old with my wife im getting me one of them Pen knives.

Bawanna?

There's a bit more to the story: Bill Martino was getting exploited by purchasers who abused HI blades and then sent them back for a replacement or refund. One in particular had been used to hit a nail, and as I recall, was the second or third blade this purchaser had sent back. Bill posted his unhappiness and started the discussion that led to the modification of the return policy. I got the ?BAS? (I think, 15 inch) and set about repairing it with slow, untalented skills. Figure 400, 600, 800 grit wet sandpaper and just sitting, watching TV as I smoothed things out, repaired the fold, and worked the edge. Took time, not talent.

Sarge had just come back from his deployment in Astan, replete with anecdotes about wearing the Pen knife in villages, where even sheathed blades are noticed and...uh..."appreciated." Somehow, we started talking and ending up swapping the repaired BAS for this Pen knife. He was pleased with the knife and repair, and I, of course, was delighted with the Pen.

As you say, a lot of history in this knife. :)

wonderful story ! you have the best kind of envy from me, thats a real treasure!----also I am terrified but rarely surprised anymore, that people would actually try to exploit bill with that warranty, you know they weren't robbing him of knives to put food on any tables or save any orphanages ... shameful that people would behave like that , disgusting even.

I will buy more knives !!!! to make up for those twerps existing.(people who exploited auntie and uncle's goodwill)

Ha!...I forgot I helped Esav necro that thread.....

Talked to Sarge a couple times via email since then.
Too bad he's so dang busy, I would dearly love for him to start posting again.
He does stop by every so often to look in on us, as he said he would.

I've got a couple Pen Knives, they are my favorite medium-size non-typical HI knife. Ferrous Wheel did that cool etching for some of the first batch that came out.
There were also some 14-16" ones that came out a couple years after they started making them, they were interesting too.
I just checked my inventory, I see that all 4 of my Pen Knives were made by Bura. Should I retire now? :)

Yay, I actually backed up my old photo directory. Here's a Bura from the first batch that Ferrous worked over for me.

Just picked up my bura pen knife today and I can see why everybody loves them. I can deff see some great use for it in camping

Going to be a tough choice between it, my small bonecutter and one of the KLUVK blades for the 4 day hike next weekend
