Hinderer Flood

In a few short weeks, RHK has completely undercut the secondary market. What were once rare offerings are now being flooded into the marketplace. I suspect it is either because RH is tired of the secondary scalping, or more likely, he sees the impending U.S. financial collapse and is cashing out, before most average folk no longer have anything left to spend on high end quality knives.

I must be missing out but what have they done in the last few weeks and what rare offerings have been released?

Or Hinderer has increased supply thus decreasing demand in the market and the overpriced secondary market is the first to go as it is mostly overpriced. I see the impending US financial collapse as unrelated to Hinderer's operation.

Not to mention the secondary market has been slowing down across the board since the end of the summer. Not just on hinderers, I’ve been seeing striders listed for $450-500 lately. They were flying off the exchange at $7-800 during the summer. I don’t think strider increased production. Same with the norseman, oz and even the arius.

It’s also holiday season - many are buying presents for family.. just wait till February

I've seen a lot of offerings recently from 2-3 of the regular online retailers, and some instances knives still up for order for a while. R.H. knives also seems to be more proactive with their newsletters.

I suspect it's a result of investing more money in equipment and labor, thus increasing supply in order to meet the heavy demand. Makes sense, as I don't see any evidence of an impending financial collapse.

Some of it is seasonal, yeah, people are always selling and prices are low right before Christmas, money is tight and expenses are high because of holiday meals and gifts and such. Usually picks up a bit after Christmas because people have gift money and with work bonuses and so on...

... But this does feel a bit different. I had a whole thread on the idea, but I am thinking we're in for a lengthy buyer's market for knives and guns.

Another Hinderer-specific thing is that what's sitting right now is the most common model in the least popular blade shape and the last of the S45VN. The S45VN CRKs also took a hit as soon as the MagnaCut ones started coming out. For Hinderer I'd want 20CV or MagnaCut. Is it truly lots better? No, but at a certain price point you aren't willing to make compromises, either, when the other is likely going to come around soon.

'Rare' offerings was probably not the best way to describe it. More accurately, a flood of bread and butter xm18's has hit both the ranch and online shops. I remember in recent years seeing drops few and far between. Anyway, at the very least, it has been a curious departure from the norm and begs the question, why for?

Hinderers available and selling for less than MSRP in many cases. What a strange world it is.
I like how they are one of the only companies in the knife industry who hasn’t raised their prices since the start of 2020. When you look at what inflation did to some of the competitors, it’s pretty damn impressive.

Nobody wants S45V (except me...I bought one XM-18). When Hinderer starts pumping out Magnacut, I'll bet you that they are hoovered up right-quick.

But, I hope not. It's a nice change to leisurely shop for NIB knives from authorized dealers at retail prices. What a luxury.

Same with Demkos. Fairly easy to get a 20S or MG 20 for around $400 in nice used condition.

Hinderer has had monthly or more frequent drops for a couple of years now. I think it's just the market being soft.

Speaking honestly, I haven't noticed any difference between S45vn and magnacut, at all. Over time maybe but I'm not holding my breath.

Right, but when you're shelling out that much for a knife, people often would rather wait for the newer steel since they're still the same price.

I would agree. I have both, and the truth is that I wouldn't know the difference if the blades weren't stamped. What I was trying to say is that most shoppers want the new hotness...which is Magnacut.

Just a theory. :)
