hey guys looking into getting my first xm18. The problem is which blade type? I'm looking between the spanto and the bowie. I love the harpoon but hard to find. Im LEO and will be carrying on duty. could be used for possible prying at doors and what not. Is the bowie tip thin? please give opinions on what blade style you like ! right now Rick and the guys at Hinderer only offer the skinner and bowie through LEO sales. I did found a spanto at LEO price.

thanks all

For all around carry I prefer the Spanto, it's beefy, strong, but still like a drop point. I LOVE the Wharncliffe design for utility, but for your purposes I would suggest the Spanto for durability.
And though the spanto would probably be the best choice for prying of the available styles, I would suggest using a pry tool for that job instead of your knife.

If you're prying stuff open, I would recommend a good quality fixed blade. Cold steel makes one of the strongest locks on the market and not even they are able to handle doubling as a pry bar. I'd recommend a full tang fixed blade with a lot of metal towards the tip. You're better off carrying a small, dedicated prybar for LEO use than ANY folder. Just my $0.02

thanks for the advice guys. sometimes the tools aren't always readily available. I try not to use my knives for things like that but sometimes theres no time and i like carry something that when it comes down to it, it will handle the task. From what i read the xm18 seems to be "MY" holy grail of duty and edc knives.

For me there is no doubt it is spanto - it is similar to a drop point yet stronger. If I am not mistaken it should be stronger than any other Hinderer grind (not saying other grinds are bad).

Blade Junkie,

I posted this pic a good while back but it might help you out a little. If I remember correctly they were in alphabetical order from left to right of Bowie, Skinner, Spanto, Spearpoint. For the most part they all have the same amount of thickness coming to the tip. Each one is going to hold up to some pretty serious abuse if necessary. I would say pick the one that appeals to you the most and get it!

Thank you for what you do!
