What are those Hinderer tools for? I mean looking at the hinderer xm 18 in front of me, it seems a normal screwdriver plus a small allen pit should take apart it without problem. Or am I missing sth important?

You can make due with normal hand tools, yes. The pivot on the lockside is the only place a "special" tool is needed, but one can easily be made. The best part of the armorers tool is it gives you everything in a small, easy to carry package.

They supposedly fit perfectly so you mar anything. You can probably make due, but will most likely get some marks on it you won't like.
Can't remember where I read it, but there is a Ti tool they make for $300.

Agree-a few scratches can make you wish you bought a tool. I own Striders also so I use the PSD tool-that works on both. I learned my lesson prepping a SnG that I had sold to someone in Canada. I was snugging up the pivot using a homemade tool, and it slipped putting a nice big scratch on an already sold knife.
And yes Hinderer does make a ti one-don't remember the price but it was up there.

Save yourself some cash. I've used real ones, i actually prefer using this one that i made.

Just so I'll be working on the correct coin, should it be a penny, dime, or actually quarter? Also, wrapping the head of a screwdriver with some scotch tape seems to help reduce/eliminate tool marks on screws.

Pick the coin that can almost fit but not quite, this allows you to file down the flats bit by bit until you get a fit that has no play in it. Go slow, once you take the steel off you can't put it back on :)
