I just received this bad boy in the mail from the ranch yesterday, it is my first Hinderer knife. It sure is built tough! At first it didn't flip very well as there was next to no detent which was a little disappointing. But then I realized the screws weren't tightened at all, one almost fell out. I tightened them all up and all of a sudden the detent was much better and flips very well now. The filler tab and extra screws didn't come with the knife, but I've reached out to Hinderer to get that sorted. I'm sure they will take care of me. Do they not ship with the filler anymore, or was this just something that was missed?

Below are a couple pics, because without them it didn't happen right? ;)

Just got my first, a blue 3" wharnie. I like the blue a lot more than I thought. Really looks good with Hinderer's amazing dark stonewash.
Congrats.
lol - you may have to change your forum name :)

It is uncharacteristic that the Ranch would allow an unfinished knife ship. But I have read were one or two have shipped without the filler tab. Guess with the busy of upcoming Blade and possibly newer employees--who knows. But I do know they will correct everything internally (if needed) and with your knife.

Welcome to the sickness! :D

Thanks for the welcome but I'm not infected heh heh. I told my wife that this is my one and only hinderer. I made her promise to divorce me if I try to buy another. I've already been bitten by Spyderco (there is no cure), it keeps me plenty busy :)

Thats a mighty risky promise... they're crazy addicting!

I'm starting to see that now. I took it apart yesterday, oiled it up and now it flips a lot better than it did. This knife is really growing on me.

I would stay away from oil. It causes lock stick. I get the best flipping action when I use a VERY sparring amount of grease.

Hmm..I used very sparing amounts of ballistol, so far so good. What do you mean by lock stick?
I have to take it apart later this week when my brass standoffs and LBS get here. So I could change to grease then.

I'll let Jake do the talking.

In my opinion both oil and grease attract dirt which gums up the pivot. RHK uses teflon washers which are pretty slick anyway. I've been running them dry since the first Gen came out.

I put a teeny tiny drop of grease. Never had an issue with that attracting dirt. I've tried running my Hinderers dry and didn't like the action.

I've noticed that when I open the blade slowly, towards the end of the swing when the lock bar hits the knife it grinds because the detent ball is no longer touching the blade.

Would you say the grinding sound and friction is normal? Obviously it isn't going to be as smooth as when the ball is touching. Thoughts?

You have to open it really slow to notice that. The distance of travel after the detent ball is no longer riding on the blade, to that very small portion of the blade & lockface touching before the lock engages is a very short distance. You never will notice it when you open the knife by conventional means. I could get any of my other knives with the same lock type to do the same thing if opened very slow.
