Hinderer XM-18 3" slicer Gen 6 disappointment

Just spoke with Scott from USA made blades......we are going to work something out Wednesday when he is back from vacation. Cant believe he answered his phone.......on vacation. He is going to put the Ti scale on the knife I want and report back to me on Wednesday. If it checks out I will buy it. The hinderer I sent back this morning was not from USA made blade.

OP - sorry for the off centered Hinderer that you got. Yes - sending back to the dealer for a refund or replacement is the way to go. However, I would not jump the conclusion that ZT and Reate both have way better tolerance than Hinderer. My experience with Hinderer is only limited to three gen 4 xm-18 3.5" but all of them are perfect. I often disassemble one of them to try out different scales and hardware and every time it just came out perfectly centered with zero blade play - no centering tricks were needed at all.

I'm going to take a little advice from above and call USA made blades. Just went through their offerings on Hinderers. They have one gen 5 XM-18 left and I would like to speak with him about that one. It has the steel lockbar insert but no bearings. I wanted either a hinderer or a reeve for outdoor camping and hiking........so I'm preferring a nonbearing knife for this role. I believe the gen 5 can run on phosphor bronze. If that one checks out I will give it another go and pick up the full Ti scale to go along with it for a full Ti knife. Really wanted a hinderer to begin with.

Gen 5 runs on teflon washers I believe.

My Hinderer which has a working finish blade didn’t flip very well with a working finish blade (not very smooth) and teflon washers.

Polishing the sides of the tang you would think it is running on bearings now.

I would get USA made blades to confirm that the model they are sending you flips well.

Hope your right. Everyone convinced me to try again.

I did not polish the blade tang but replace the teflon washers with some PB washers (which were polished first). The action is definitely smoother.

Scott confirmed the gen 5 can run on the same phosphor bronze that the gen 6 does.......you just leave out the metal filler washers and put in the phosphor bronze only.

That working finish seems to create a fair bit of drag. Looks cool I guess but its main strength is definitely hiding scratches.

Great guys. They are on here a lot with a reputation of first class,

You know. If it's centered who cares. As long as it does not hit the scales WTF.
Function wise it doesn't matter, but it can drive some completely batty. Others no big deal. If you aren't happy with your brand new knife, sending it back is the best option for both the manufacturer and buyer. It will just continue to bother the buyer and they will be unhappy. Unhappy buyers tend to let everyone know which hurts the manufacturer.
