Hinderer XM-18 First Impressions

Hinderers are solid production knives. I prefer to classify them as knives that flip, rather than true flippers. The ones I've owned flipped with zero wrist action after a slight break-in. They are very handy if wearing gloves.

You know just what to say to me :D My Hinderer has no reservations about stepping into the ring with some real competitors...

Apparently now the claim is that they are knives with flippers, they're not flippers. Whatever that is supposed to mean? The simple answer is, as has been said, they have weak detents. Firmer detent, more energy stored before the detent is over come, good flipping knife. The one major flaw in a great design but they are not going to change it and they don't want to hear about it, so take it or leave it.

+1

I would love to try one but won't pay the ridiculous mark up on them. I still don't get why he can't keep up with demand.

Because Haas CNC machines are expensive, require skilled operators, require proper manufacturing floor space, requiring significant capital/commitment, etc., etc. Rick Hinderer Knives has increased output every year since the XM series of knives has been introduced and has sold more direct to customers via their website/knife shows/forums/social media in the past year and secondary market prices have decreased.

Now do you understand?

There have been countless opportunities to purchase one at the table price in 2013.

If you are under 25 years old, the Hinderer is not for you. You are young and want to flip your knife constantly. That is not what the XM-18 was designed for. There should be a minimum age limit for owning Sebenzas and Hinderers: it would cut down on the complaining.

My 3" XM-18 still does not have a great flipper action. It's the only minor disappointment I have with it. These days there are so many better flippers but not better folders.

The 3" is certainly more difficult. I found it much easier after refining my technique. They are great folders, regardless.

IIRC, Rick had 50 for sale on the website around Christmas at regular retail prices.

How is it that every single one of your posts that I come across involves you making a negative, generalized statement about a specific group of people?

I guess I should've waited until I was older to get my first CRK, i was wondering why i was so disappointed with it!! Who knew it was because i was 23 and that is somehow relevant.

I really wish I would've consulted you before ordering my first custom flipper too...I just can't stop flipping it constantly and its really starting to take its toll on my social life.

Yes, they made 50 available at two separate occasions, once on Cyber Monday (when they nearly brought the Internet to a halt) and 50 more on December 23rd.

I imagine there will be future opportunities like this.

Technique my friend :D Pre load pressure with your finger upwards on the gnarls on the flipper, then pull your finger back fast!! Pow! Ping! Pang! That's how you flip it man!!

I'm gonna hold you to that, buddy. So where did you get those Ti scales? Are they aftermarket?

I actually watched the exchange until one came up, already with the ti scale. I got pretty lucky, it only took three or four days :D

I would say hes doing pretty good at keeping up with demand you can buy one at any time at this point. It may not be a price your happy with but they are there.

"I refer to them as knives that flip, rather than true flipper". That is the best description that I've read regarding the XM-18's flipping idiosyncrasies. Even though it is not a "true flipper", there is much to love about the XM-18's. Still, I would love to handle one that deployed like a true flipper.
