Hinderer XM-18 problem

A few months back I bought a new Hinderer XM-18 harpoon point direct from Hinderer. No problems at first, saw some light pocket time and opened a few boxes for Christmas. But last week something shifted, so when I close it now the blade lightly hits the liner opposite of the lockbar. It makes an audible noise as it hits it. I assume the lockbar is pushing it sideways somehow? Never had this problem with my other XMs.

Mainly want to know if this is something I can fix myself (I don't have any of the Hinderer tools), or will I need to send it back for them to fix it? If it is a simple fix I can do myself can someone explain how? Thanks much.

Tighten the pivot. The special tool you need is called a "dime" or "flat head screwdriver".

If the opposite side spins tighten the pivot with the blade locked open.

When I don't have a spanner tool available for the nut side of the pivot, I open the blade (locked open) and carefully press the blade sideways (usually against a safe object while gripping the handle of the knife) and use a flat screwdriver (or a penny) on the pivot screw.

If further adjustment is necessary (shouldn't be in your case), I "unsnug" the handle screws, lightly wedge a toothpick between the blade and the side it favors, then snug the handle screws back tight - lastly remove toothpick and recheck handle screw tightness.

If none of these suggestions work and you have the time, drive over to Salisbury, NC and I will be happy to fix it for you. If I remember correctly you are about 90 minutes away!

Thanks, sounds like an easy fix.

Whitty if need be I'll take you up on that, appreciate it. :)

If it loosened up on its own you won't need anything but your finger to hold the pivot side and probably a finger nail to tighten the pivot screw. If it happens again, take the pivot screw out almost all the way and put a drop of purple loktite on the threads, adjust the pivot screw to your liking and let it sit overnight.

+1 on this. If you don't have Loctite, you can remove the screw all the way and put a few wraps of teflon pipe thread tape on the screw and re-install.

Agreed with all above, definitely do the loctite as well once you tune it to your liking.

Corkscrew on a SAK also works to open the pivot assembly if you can't get it loosened with your finger. I've done that with mine very delicately. Hold the other side with your finger while you turn it.

Teflon tape also works to keep the screw from backing off
If you need centering instructions they are in the Hinderer forum(archive) sticky
