hinking of buying this grinder. what is it.

I live near to the origin of this add and am in search of a 2x72, but fear not, even if I had the funds readily at hand I couldn't buy this out from under you. But I bet this guy's phone has been ringing off the hook.

Are you in KY?

For those that know such things, is this a good price on a used grinder of unknown history? The only thing that I see other than the motor and vfd is a flat platen. I've been shopping for a while and my first reaction was that this was a little pricey, at asking price. Am I wrong? Depending on motor and vfd choice, couldn't one build a kmg clone for about the same cost? Finally if both are equal in cost, is there a performance difference between a factory built grinder versus a home built grinder if built using quality components and careful if not experienced construction?

PS If you exercise a little google fu or ryu yahoo on his phone number then one might find that he has some other goodies for sale. Anvil add expires today. The area code for the number is not in KY, Massachusetts maybe, which is what made me curious.

If the cost was to be near the same, I would take the factory one. There is a lot of work into making your own. Frank

Before you buy it check out Salem Straub's site. He used to have a lot of info posted on belt grinders. Otherwise, I think the price is quite a bit less than a new one and every post I've read indicates they are good grinders.

Without some specs it is hard to say. A new VS Bader with 2HP motor plus several arms and wheels is only about $1000 more than that one. It will have a warranty and new bearings. Can't tell from the photo, but the motor could be DC with a Penta controller, or the newer 3PH with VFD. They also come in 1.5HP and 2HP.

If you know nothing about grinders, take someone who does with you to listen to ,it run and check out how it grinds and tracks. Unless it has a lot of extra wheels and stuff, I would offer them $1200 and see what they say. Half the new price would be max, unless it is less than a year old and pristine.

i offered 1000 have not heard back. i know a little about motors. not much about an actual grinder tho. im thinking if he don't take my offer i may just build one from the grinder in a box kit.

A good reason to fill out your profile is someone near you could offer to help you look at the grinder.
