Hissatu folder vs gerber combat folder

:D
made for a purpose  (and i don't mean plywood)

 Thank you for posting the pic. If you get the Hissatsu, let us know what you think of it?

Definetly, for the price I don't think I have a lot to lose. I might grab it.

Hey Edwood7, you seem to think that the hissatsu folder performs really well. Yet you don't seem to be too crazy about it..what do you think are the problems with it?

The handle shape is all wrong on the folder, it really becomes a problem when attempting to maintain a grip on it and trying to penetrate a moving object whit it. ( I tried it out on a pig carcass that was swing on a chain) But it does really penetrate better than most knives I have tested out this way. The designe of the point on this knife is perfect for stabbing.

And the sheath system on the fixed blade rattles a bit too much and I’m not all that sure about its retention capabilities. I carried one for a few months but after a few times that it fell out of its sheath I put it in the discarded blade box. May be if they felt lined the interior of the sheath.

And obviously it is only made for one thing, killing. And since I like multi functional tools whit me, this knife just doesn’t stand up to the other options out there.

I have both the hissatsu folder and it's smaller brother; the heiho (hissatsu 2) and they are pretty decent - not great, but still neat folders... I agree that the handle on the hissatsu is not perfect, but most pics I've seen of people using it seem to employ an ice pick grip so it works ok like that. I have not seen the gerber in person, so can't say what it's like but it looks sturdy. When in doubt, buy both!

Do you think the handle can be modified to be better? Would putting some grip tape or jimping on the handle solve the problem?

stipple the zytel (carefully) w a soldering iron with a fine tip?... I may do this to mine - but I don't want to overdo it! maybe just around the edges or at key gripping points. grip tape may work, probably would need to grind/flatten the area on the grip scales where the tape will go so it stiks better. just a suggestion. Also, the jimping idea would be cool too. Fancy filework on zytel slabs could be neat if it can be done. OR, full g10 replacement with full on customization for super grip!!!

The lack of any type of guard or something similar is what worries me seeing that this is supposed to be used as a stabbing weapon primarily, and it really doesn’t lend itself to a saber grip if for some reason you have to use it in this form.

The closest thing I have found to a perfect handle for on offensive knife is the one on my bedlam 860. It’s just great for reverse grip and saber grip cuts and stabs.

That little metal spike on the end of the Benchmade Bedlam is good to split open some ones head as well, or break a window.

I would go with the Gerber Combat folder. I also have one of the old ones, with the single bevel though, so it looks a bit more like a large utilitarian knife. (granted somebody did a hack job with a dremel and a polishing wheel on it before I snatched it up.) It's big, feels nice in the hand, and it can be used for multiple chores.

The Gerber Combat has a 4.5" 420HC blade and the Covert has a 3.8" 154CM blade. For a while the Combat did not come with a pocket clip but a call to Gerber and they will send you one free.
At one time they both came in S30V i think for the military and are only found used now I believe. The Covert is lighter and smaller and comes in better steel so I would recommend that one.
