Historic Pen Knife - DC

October. 4, 1901

The reported attempt to blow up the McKinley vault has proven to be a fake
sensation existing only in the imaginative [print] brain of some reporter. +

When President McKinley’s clothing which he wore when he was shot was
examined there were the following articles: One dollar and eighty cents in
coin, a silver nugget pocket piece, three small pocket knives, one battered
coin, a pocketbook containing $45 in bills, a lead pencil, three short cigars,
two of them chewed, an open faced watch and h[print] chain, but not a clew
[sic] as to his identity. +

[more articles, lengthy, on new president, his activities and schedule, other. ]

I think, McKinleys knife was a Maher & Grosh from Toledo Ohio

Interesting Google some more, in fact William McKinley had influence on the cutlery industry with the McKinley Tariff act of 1890 which required stampings of country of origin for goods made overseas

Tx, interesting history you have posted here.
From the M&G ad you posted i do not see a knife similar to the one pictured as McKinley's in the OP. What leads you to believe it is an M&G ?

They say President McKinley thinks the one in the pouch is just right, but it might have been one of the other two knives he was carrying.

Purely speculation but now see one in photo has scalloped bolsters but seems M&G very popular in the era,

And thanks Joe, not that fun photos of scouts and beer aren't fun, but do like traditional knives for the pure nostalgia of it, my other hobby building if you can believe is mechanical pencils which have a similar appeal to me
