historical origins of the 'canadian' grohman/russel style knife?

A great interpretation of a trade knife, I am sure I have seen older versions of this knife before 1958. I've had a few of the real deal blades, but I could never quite get accustomed to it.

Can you show any examples of the earlier trade knives you say it is based upon? I have seen a fair number in both books and museums and can't see the resemblance.
