Hey all I'm new here and after buying my first spydie (a dragonfly v1) i'm hooked and looking for my next purchase! Now I was really looking into another spyderco since the quality of the dragonfly blew me away but I really can't decide... I've got it to either a centofante iii, endura/delica, maybe manix 2 or I could throw it all out the window and go for the buck vantage pro. I really want a blade thats bigger than the dragonfly which is small and would really like to try a new steel. I heard vg10 is great at taking an edge but s30v holds it longer so my mind is all confounded with choices :grumpy: i really like the look and blade type of the buck and i did notice many high quality knives are s30v (sebenza, paramilitary). Any help is much appreciated!!

The vantage is a great knife considering the materials used and the price point. The Vantage has had some fit/finish issues in the past. That being said I am a Spyderco fan and would tell you to go the route of a Manix 2.

I would say the logical progression would be an Endura. Buck are just fine but not the same as Spyderco. The Manix 2 is a good choice as well. Get one full flat ground though. The Manix 2 is just a dream to hold in hand. Ergonomics are fantastic. OK I go to go play with...

I got a buck vantage pro a couple of days ago and I am not impressed. The blade is so stiff you can barely flip it out with the flipper, and the thumb opener is hard to get to if you want to open it without the flipper. The liner is also thin and flimsy. The s30v is awesome though. That being said I love and recommend the Manix 2. The fit and finish is awesome. I liked my first manix 2 so much I bought another with a dlc coated black blade. Get the Manix 2!!!

I would recommend a Buck Custom 110 in S30V and Oak scales. Failing that, money spent on a ZDP-189 Endura is never wasted.

JW, coyote and southside thanks so much for the help! APF I really like the sound of that but I don't have more than about 60 bucks to spend (no pun intended) which brings me to my new dilema...where can I find a manix 2 for that price? I do know ffg versions of it are more expensive so how does the 154cm version compare?

As much as I like Buck when it comes to more modern knives I believe Spyderco has the advantage I personally would go with a FFG Endura or Delica the Manix 2 is also a fine knife and made in the USA also take a hard look at the Stretch.

Thanks for the suggestion whetrock the buck's been pretty much ruled out but now i'm trying to find a manix 2 for cheap :D one quick question though how does 154cm stack up against vg10? and to those who own both how's an endura ffg fare off against a manix 2?

ok well i've been looking around and i found the manix 2 cheapest at amazon...problem is it wont ship till july 30th :/ on the other hand i spotted another spyderco called the native which i remember seeing at another shop (in the mall actually) and i really liked the look of it and its cheaper (also its s30v) so now i cant decide whether to go for the manix 2 and wait or go for the native now... help!

before i say anything on steels, I will say that a good steel is good becuase of it's heat treat. s30v with a bad heat treat will probably be outperformed by 420HC with a excellent heat treat. I doubt this would ever happen, but you get the idea. that said, i like 154 cm. it seems to hold an edge for me, and i have never had problems with the one knife that i have in it. a 154 cm manix would probably be just fine.

154cm is a great steel. It holds a sharp edge for a good amount of time and is easier to sharpen then s30v. I think it compares very favorably to vg10. The native is a pretty nice knife, but the Manix 2 is made better. The native has a rivet instead of a tork screw, and cannot be adjusted. I got both my manix 2's off ebay and both are hollow ground 154cm. The black g10, stainless blade was 73$ shipped, and the dlc coated black on black manix 2 was 96$. great knives, if you cannot afford the 10-30$ extra for the manix 2 wait a week, you wont be disappointed...

I would go with the Buck Vantage Pro. I prefer S30V over 154CM, and Buck's HT is known to be fantastic. Plus, the Manix 2 is a pig of a knife for the length/thickness of blade you get. It's very tall in profile when folded in pocket, and you lose a ton of cutting edge from the way the choil is designed on it. I like the higher grind on the Vantage better, too.

Vantage Pro has better steel, smaller foot print, low ride clip, and costs less. I love my Spydies, but Buck makes great knives as well.

hmmm ok ok so now how would a vantage pro stack up against a manix 2? i'm planning to use it for edc use

I've had both, The Vantage Pro I sold, I still have the Manix 2. In my honest opinion, I'd go with the Manix 2. Nothing against the Vantage, a great knife, especially for the price, but I think the Manix blows it away. This is coming from an old-time Buck lover, and the Manix 2 being my first experience with Spyderco...Just my 2 cents worth...

ok ok one last thing i found the manix 2 on ANTOnline but i don't know anything about this site is it legitimate? safe? good service? it's the cheapest i could find that has it in stock now (as stated before amazon wont have em till the end of the month :( )
Thanks!
